Lira41Hello everyone, I am planning to install Billy shelves from Ikea in a room with a sloped ceiling and am looking for the best ways to adapt these shelves to fit the angled wall perfectly. The challenge is that the standard width and height of the shelves don’t quite match the room’s geometry, especially the sloped upper boundary.
I am particularly interested in which practical solutions have proven effective, for example trimming, adjustable shelves, or special mounting methods, so that the shelves not only look good but also stand securely and make the best use of the room height.
If anyone has experience with clamping or supporting the shelves under sloped ceilings, I would also appreciate tips on how to measure precisely or which additional materials (e.g., brackets, molding) are useful.
Thanks in advance for your responses!

The best approach is to measure the shelves precisely and trim them at the top to fit the sloped ceiling using a jigsaw or a handsaw. Prefabricated cuttings are unfortunately not available for Billy shelves.
Then, firmly secure them to the wall using brackets to prevent any wobbling.

It is best to measure the shelves precisely and adjust the top edge along the sloping ceiling using a jigsaw or a handsaw.Accurate measurement is fundamental when working with sloped ceilings. I recommend determining the angle of the slope more precisely with a protractor or a bevel gauge to create a perfectly fitting cut surface.
For added stability, it is advisable to install additional angle brackets along the inner edges of the shelves, which can be screwed into the wall. Securing them to structurally sound wall areas is essential, especially since sloped ceilings often consist of drywall.
An alternative to trimming the shelf is to use custom-cut trim strips or panels to visually smooth the transition along the slope if the shelf is not fully modified.
Another tip: to make the most of the room height, custom-made cabinet doors or adjustable shelves are also suitable, allowing efficient use of the space under the slope.

To improve stability, it is recommended to install additional angle brackets on the interior edges of the shelves, which can be screwed into the wall. This is a reasonable approach, but I wonder whether fastening to the wall under the sloped ceiling is truly strong enough. Drywall can be problematic for heavy loads.
From my experience, the load distribution should be improved by adding a vertical support, for example, a narrow piece of wood or a metal bracket that rests on the floor and carries the load. This reduces the pressure on the wall anchors.

If anyone has experience with clamping or supporting shelves under sloped ceilingsI personally have used the shelf combined with such supports to ensure stability. Also, adjusting the back panel of the Billy shelf by cutting the upper part to match the slope provides a better fit and reduces movement play.
