Hello everyone,

I’m moving into a new rental apartment soon and would like to set up a Billy bookcase from Ikea. However, the problem is that drilling into the walls is not allowed according to the rental agreement. I’m therefore looking for ways to securely and stably fix the bookcase without drilling into the wall. It should also be sturdy since I plan to fill it with books and other heavy items.

Does anyone know practical solutions for installing or securing Billy bookcases in rental apartments without drilling into the walls? Are there specific fastening systems or alternative methods that have proven effective?

Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!

Hello sonannette,

your question is very well formulated and addresses a common issue in rented apartments. Since drilling is often prohibited for legal reasons related to tenancy, there are actually a few handy options to still secure your Billy shelf safely.

First, I would recommend securing the shelf using so-called “furniture safety sets for shelves” that operate with clamping mechanisms without drilling—these often rely on force-enhancing tension devices between the ceiling and the shelf. Of course, you should check whether your ceiling height and condition allow for this.

Alternatively, you can connect shelves within a frame or multiple Billy shelves joined together using fastening elements (such as brackets or screws from above into the shelf itself), so that the entire structure stands more steadily and is less likely to tip over. Placing the shelf in a corner also provides greater stability.

As a third option, some tenants recommend self-adhesive hooks or laser hook-and-loop systems on the wall, which can offer light securing. However, these are often not sufficient for heavy or fully loaded shelves.

So the answer strongly depends on the level of stability you need and the load you expect. If you like, I can also share some product names or sources with you. 🙂

In addition to what Ianlau has already explained, I would like to provide a few systematic suggestions.

1. Freestanding shelves: If the load is not too heavy, you can alternatively choose shelving systems that do not require any wall mounting and are based on a Q-shaped frame. However, Billy shelves themselves are primarily designed for wall installation.

2. For stability, place the shelf in niches or corners: This reduces the risk of tipping.

3. Anti-tip devices using tension straps running from the shelf to the ceiling (without drilling) can work if the ceiling and floor surfaces are solid and non-slip. Pay attention to materials with sufficient friction—such as rubber mats under the shelf feet.

4. Avoid fully loading shelves at height—store heavier items as low as possible.

In everyday practical terms, none of these methods without wall drilling can provide the 100-percent security that a proper wall mounting offers. A combination of several measures (anti-slip mats, tension straps, connecting multiple elements) provides the best compromise.

If tenant rights are to be respected, I also recommend clarifying with the landlord whether minimalist drilling with appropriate restoration is permitted—often, there is willingness to discuss this.

Hey sonannette,

an interesting challenge to secure a shelf without drilling! I know the problem – in my apartment, I’m not allowed to make holes in the walls either. What worked really well for me was using anti-slip mats (like rubber car floor mats) under the shelf feet – this makes it much more stable and prevents it from sliding easily.

I also used tension straps tightened between the shelf and the ceiling. It feels like an anti-tip belt, very practical, and can be removed without leaving any marks.

a corner provides more stability.

I can definitely confirm that! Placing the shelf in a corner adds extra firmness. Oh, and a small tip: when filling it, put the heaviest items on the bottom, so the center of gravity is much better. Otherwise, the good old Billy with books on top quickly turns into a wobbly tower. 😉

Good luck, I hope you find a solution that works well for you! 🙂

I would like to add a critical note here.

The assumption that you can securely and reliably fix a Billy shelf without anchoring it to the wall is quite optimistic. These shelves are originally designed to be secured to the wall because the risk of tipping over is high, especially when fully loaded.

This should be taken seriously, especially if there are small children in the household or if the shelf is heavily loaded. Alternative methods can help but represent risk factors rather than equivalent safety measures.

I recommend discussing with the landlord whether a minimally invasive wall attachment could be permitted – this is often allowed if the drill holes are properly repaired afterwards. And: Safety should be the top priority, even if aesthetics or preserving the wall’s condition are important.
