Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a Malm bed from IKEA, but I feel it’s not as stable as I would like. Especially when sitting down or moving around on it more firmly, the frame wobbles slightly, which makes me a bit uneasy. I have already made sure to tighten all the screws securely, but I’m not sure if there are any assembly tips or adjustments that could significantly improve its stability.

How have you made your Malm bed more stable? Are there any special tips or tricks, such as particular screw techniques, additional parts, or assembly methods? I would appreciate any advice on how to get the bed to stand firmly and safely without constantly worrying that something might give way.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

Hello Kar49,

I can understand how frustrating it is when the bed feels slightly wobbly. I experienced something similar before I added some reinforcements. The best approach is to proceed methodically, step by step:

- Make sure all screws are tightened evenly.
- Check the surface the bed is standing on (sometimes small unevenness can affect stability).
- If needed, install metal brackets or reinforcement strips.

Be patient during the assembly and test the stability periodically. I find that you can reinforce the bed within 1–2 hours, which greatly improves the sleeping experience.

Keep at it; it’s worth it! 🙂

If the bed still wobbles, carefully check all the joints again. Sometimes it’s small screws that are easy to overlook. Applying a bit of wood glue to the joints can also help.

Plywood is an excellent choice because it provides high stability and is relatively lightweight.

Great, thanks! One last question: What about the color and surface finish? Do I absolutely have to paint the wooden strips, or is plywood usually treated differently? Ideally, I’d like the interior to remain as "invisible" as possible, but also not be susceptible to moisture or dirt.

Thanks for the great input so far!

Hello Kar49,

From my experience, it is completely sufficient to treat plywood strips with a clear wood varnish or a matte acrylic topcoat. This seals the surface, prevents moisture damage and dirt, without making the strips very visible. A matte finish is often less noticeable than a glossy one.

If the bed stays dry and indoors, you don’t necessarily need to use stain or oil. A simple two-component wood varnish is enough.

A small tip: lightly sand before varnishing (grit 150–180) and then dust off thoroughly for a clean application.

This way, the quality is preserved while keeping the appearance unobtrusive.

Good luck with the project!
