ᐅ Why does my Malm bed wobble even though it is secured to the wall?

I have a Malm bed from IKEA that I have already attached to the wall to finally avoid the annoying wobbling. Despite proper wall attachment and tightly secured screws, I still notice slight movement when I shift on it, especially when sitting down or getting up. The wobbling is not strong, but clearly noticeable.

My question: Why does my Malm bed wobble despite being fixed to the wall? Are there any known weak points with this model or specific installation instructions that I might have overlooked? I am using the original IKEA wall brackets and have also checked the mattress – it shouldn’t be the cause.

I look forward to well-informed tips or experiences that could help me finally get the bed stable.

You’ve probably tried everything already, but sometimes a little wobble in the bed is just part of the “character” of furniture made from lighter materials 😄.

If it bothers you, you can try using foam pads at the contact points. They help absorb vibrations and also prevent rattling.

This gives the whole thing a small comfort boost without major modifications.

Hello marton45,

I understand your situation. Even if you use the original wall mount from IKEA, a wall mount alone cannot prevent all movement, especially if the bed is on an uneven floor or if there are gaps between the bed frame and the adjacent walls.

A very sturdy wall mount alone is of little use if the bed stands on wobbly legs.

I also recommend checking whether the screws in the furniture joints (for example, corners, side frames) have any play. Sometimes you can tighten the screws further due to slight wear or assembly errors, or replace them with screws that have a larger thread diameter if it is safe to do so.

Alternatively, small washers can be useful to eliminate any play.

If you had a detailed photo album of your assembly, it would be easier to provide targeted advice, but I believe these points are the most common causes.

I agree with that. Furniture made from particleboard, like the Malm bed, has limited stability overall. Even with proper wall anchoring and a well-assembled frame, some flexibility under load is to be expected.

However, if the wobbling is excessive, it is often due to incorrect assembly or a material defect. Otherwise, a certain amount of movement is normal.

Important: Check whether the fastening materials are suitable for the wall. This means not only considering anchors and screws but also the wall types. In the case of drywall without sufficient substructure, the mounting will not hold securely, and the bed may wobble.

Also check the slatted frame, as it sometimes does not fit perfectly – this is often only noticed after assembly.

I would also check whether the angles of the wall mounting are correctly aligned. If they are not flush with the wall, this can cause some movement.
