Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a Malm bed myself, but it started to squeak unpleasantly after just a few days, which of course is quite annoying.

My question to the community is: Based on your experience, what is the most common mistake during the assembly of a Malm bed that causes it to start squeaking after being put together?

I have already checked that all the screws are tightened properly, but the squeaking continues. I would be very grateful for tips on frequently overlooked issues, as well as suggestions for fixing them.

Additionally: If you really can’t stop the squeaking, it’s advisable to temporarily treat the stressed areas with wax (candle wax). This is a time-tested method in furniture making to reduce friction on wooden joints without using plastic or oil.

Wax dries and acts as a delicate lubricant, without causing stains or other issues.

Does anyone have experience with this? Can the squeaking be fixed with some lubricant, or is that rather counterproductive?

Lubricants are only useful if the exact squeaking spot can be clearly identified and it involves metal joints. They are not recommended for wood or engineered wood connections, as they can damage the material over time.

I suggest addressing the issue mechanically: tighten any loose screws, prevent small movements, and add cushioning between the friction surfaces.

If the bed is standing on an uneven floor, this can also cause tension, so be sure to check that the bed is fully supported.

Current update:

Last night, I took everything apart again and tightened all the screws properly – the slatted frame now fits much more firmly. I also added small felt strips at problematic spots.

The squeaking is significantly reduced, almost gone.

Thank you all for the helpful advice! If the problem recurs, I will follow your tips regarding wax and the joints.
