Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of assembling several IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces with as little stress as possible, mainly due to the sometimes complex instructions and the many individual parts. My specific question is: How can I organize and prepare the assembly of the HEMNES series, such as cabinets and dressers, to minimize frustration and mistakes—especially regarding the order of the steps, the tools used, and helpful tips that make the process easier? Does anyone have experience or strategies that help with assembling this particular furniture series, so I can better plan the process and manage it without time pressure or stress?

How can I organize and prepare the assembly of the HEMNES series, such as cabinets and dressers, to minimize frustration and mistakes—especially regarding the order of tasks, the tools used, and helpful tips that make assembly easier?I know the feeling well, as I recently assembled a HEMNES wardrobe myself and was initially more stressed than relaxed. What really helped me was taking a calm half hour before starting to sort all the individual parts and match the screws with the instructions.
Although the HEMNES components feel sturdy, they can be somewhat confusing. That’s why I recommend completing all the steps for one item before moving on to the next. Focusing on small sections reduces errors and the feeling of being overwhelmed.
For tools, I suggest a good Phillips screwdriver with an ergonomic handle. Although IKEA sometimes recommends a cordless drill, I find manual tools more precise in case adjustments are needed along the way.
And very importantly: if you feel uncertain, it’s better to take a short break or ask here in the forum instead of letting frustration take over. That only wastes unnecessary energy.
What helped me most was staying positive and treating the whole thing as a small DIY project where you keep a nice result in mind, rather than seeing assembly as a tedious chore.

especially regarding the sequence of work steps, the tools used, and helpful tips that make assembly easier? From a technical perspective, a smooth assembly can be optimized as follows:
- Preparation: Lay out all parts on a clear surface and sort them by type (screws, boards, fittings).
- Read the instructions carefully, as some steps for HEMNES dressers or cabinets vary slightly depending on the model.
- Tools: A Phillips screwdriver size PH2 is ideal. A cordless drill with a low torque setting can save time but carries the risk of over-tightening.
- Sequence: Proceed systematically and step by step, without shortcuts.
- Check: After each major assembly step, verify that everything is tight. Tighten any loose parts later on.
- Teamwork: If possible, having a second person assist with larger parts or to hold pieces in place is helpful.
Practical experience shows that HEMNES furniture requires no exceptions regarding patience and care, but thanks to its simple construction, it can be assembled relatively easily when approached in an organized manner.

If you’re unsure, it’s better to take a short break or ask here in the forum instead of letting frustration take over. That’s good advice, but I wonder how realistic it is when you’re limited on time. Especially with furniture like HEMNES, you often don’t have large time windows. In my experience, assembling over several evenings can be counterproductive because you have to reorient yourself each time.
That’s why I believe it’s crucial to carefully plan your time blocks instead of taking breaks, so you can complete at least the majority of the assembly in one continuous session.

Lay out all parts on a clear surface and sort them by typeI’m also skeptical about this, because some IKEA instructions recommend the opposite: follow the steps directly and don’t spend too much time sorting. With so many parts, there’s a risk of losing focus right at the start.
So, how to proceed—sorting or step-by-step assembly? My opinion: a mix of both, where keeping track of screws and small parts is essential, but boards and panels should only be taken out when needed. Otherwise, you end up spending too much time in the sorting phase.

So – sorting or step-by-step assembly? My opinion: a combination of both, where having an overview of screws and small parts is essential, but boards and panels should only be taken out when needed.I agree with this and would like to add:
- Especially with HEMNES, having a central overview of screws and fittings is important because they are often used multiple times but can be easily confused.
- For larger wooden parts, it is advisable to keep them in their original packaging or protected until needed. This prevents scratches and mix-ups.
- Additionally, during assembly, make sure to protect the parts from dust and dirt to avoid damaging pre-drilled holes and edges.
- For tools, a good Phillips screwdriver and a hammer are usually enough. For bigger models, a hex key handle with torque control can be helpful.
- Most importantly: be patient. HEMNES furniture is sturdy but not designed for very fast assembly.
Keeping a long-term perspective on the finished result can help to stay calm through the small challenges during assembly.
