Hello,

we are planning a kind of natural stone tile backsplash, 10 mm thick, so I estimate the overall height including adhesive to be at least 12 mm (0.5 inches).
Ok, a mounting rail seems practical; it goes up to 87.5 cm (34.4 inches), so there should be no tiles there. The top edge of the countertop reaches 92 cm (36.2 inches). The tiles should start no later than this point.
What is the best height to start the tiles?
1) Start at around 90 cm (35.4 inches), so the countertop would butt up against the tiles?
2) Start at 92 cm (36.2 inches) plus a 5 mm (0.2 inches) tolerance = 92.5 cm (36.4 inches), so the countertop would extend in front of the wall below the tiles?

Regarding option 1), I wonder if there is enough tolerance of about one centimeter (0.4 inches) for the countertop to protrude further forward than it would without tiles. Would it still rest on the metal bracket of the base cabinets at the back? Should we use a 62.5 cm (24.6 inches) countertop depth instead of 63.5 cm (25 inches)?
For option 2), I am a bit concerned that everything will need to fit perfectly.

This is a new build, so we can do everything properly and ideally. The tiler should come before the painter, and the painter before the kitchen installation.

Thank you

How about option 1), and placing a wooden batten beneath the hanging rail, matching the thickness of the tile backing?

I am now exactly at this point... and will proceed as follows.

Base cabinets including the countertop have been installed, and now I am placing the tiles on top (cutting them to 60cm x 50cm (24 inches x 20 inches) so they align properly with the wall cabinets). Instead of using tile adhesive, I am fixing them with construction adhesive – this way, if you ever want to remove them, it will be easier.
