Hello

We are having problems with water infiltration in our garden.
During heavy rain, water accumulates on the surface and forms a pool, especially on the terrace where the largest volume of water (rain plus runoff from the terrace) flows onto the lawn and cannot infiltrate directly.

We have installed a drainage system, but the water still cannot infiltrate quickly enough.

We are considering installing a channel drain at the edge of the terrace so that only rainwater reaches the lawn for infiltration, while all the runoff from the terrace flows into the channel drain and then into the drainage system.

The drainage system is connected to our soakaway.

The soakaway is located too far from the terrace to create and maintain a continuous slope.

My question is: does the channel drain by the terrace have any disadvantages, or only advantages, since it would ensure the water can always drain away?

Well. In addition to the 100m² (1,076 sq ft) roof area of the house plus 40m² (430 sq ft) garage, I’m roughly estimating—without knowing your exact measurements—you now want to connect a 40m² (430 sq ft) terrace to your seepage pit. Naturally, it will eventually reach its capacity, especially during heavy rainfall over a short period.

That’s nearly 200m² (2,153 sq ft) total; if only 10 liters (2.6 gallons) of rain fall on it, you have to manage 2m³ (71 cubic feet) of water.

In the end, you will have to test this yourself. Even with detailed knowledge of your property, soil conditions, etc., don’t expect to simulate this accurately without considerable effort.

@MachsSelbst The infiltration basin on our property is quite large, and when it fills up, it has an overflow that leads to the street.

If the garden soil slope was correct, then the surface water from the terrace would flow over the lawn into the infiltration basin, with only a small amount infiltrating into the lawn, right?

Are there any other drawbacks to using the channel drain?

A lot of dirt and debris could pass through the infiltration basin via the channel drain, couldn’t it? But this can be minimized with a grate or screen.
