Hello everyone, I am currently planning a kitchen island using the Ikea Metod system that should provide a lot of storage space without overwhelming the room or losing style. I am especially interested in how to efficiently design such an island so that the storage elements are practical and easily accessible. Additionally, the design should remain modern and appealing, so I would appreciate tips on fronts, countertops, and handles that are both functional and visually fitting. Does anyone have experience with combining Ikea Metod kitchen islands with ample storage? What is the best way to maximize the modules while maintaining a stylish look? I would be grateful for detailed suggestions, especially on how to avoid common problems like poor space utilization or overly bulky islands.

Your questions raise important points. Regarding lighting integration: Although Ikea Metod does not offer specially integrated LED profiles for islands, this can be effectively solved using LED strips that are attached under the countertop. Use energy-efficient, warm white LEDs that do not emit heat to the cabinets. A small power supply in the plinth or a concealed cable channel ensures a clean result.

Regarding the countertop: Solid wood looks very attractive and lively but is more sensitive to moisture and scratches. It requires regular maintenance and oil treatment. Quartz composite, on the other hand, is durable, hygienic, and relatively resistant to stains and heat. For a heavily used island that also provides storage, quartz is practical and stable. Tip: The countertop thickness should be at least 2 to 3 cm (0.8 to 1.2 inches) to prevent sagging over longer cantilevered sections.

Regarding storage optimization once again: corner solutions in the island – if space allows – can be equipped with special carousel systems. These make good use of the space and can be combined with pull-out drawers. Simple shelves or hooks for kitchen utensils on the sides of the island are also practical.

A clear organization of compartments is helpful when planning a Metod kitchen island:

- Upper shallow drawers for cutlery, knives, and kitchen tools
- Middle drawers for storage containers, pots, and pans
- Lower deep drawers for large items or waste separation

If a lot of storage space is desired, it is advisable to combine these with fully extendable inner drawers to easily reach items at the back. It is also worthwhile to consider soft-close drawer systems, which are durable and quiet. For the cabinet fronts, handleless designs are elegant, especially when finished in matte colors to avoid appearing too dominant.

I have had good experience with open shelving on one side of my Metod island. This allows for quick access to bags, cookbooks, or decorations, and creates an open feel. At the same time, there is still plenty of storage space in the cabinet units with drawers.

To avoid a bulky appearance, I recommend keeping the island width to a maximum of 120 cm (47 inches) and a length of 180–200 cm (71–79 inches), if the space allows. A depth greater than 1 meter (39 inches) is usually unnecessary and makes it harder to access the backs of the cabinets. For storage, internal drawers with telescopic slides are the best choice because they are sturdy and operate smoothly. Planning combinations of deep base cabinets with shallow and tall drawers helps keep the island functional and well-organized.

Do you think it’s easy to integrate lighting with Ikea Metod, or is it better to use a separate solution?

In practice, a separate solution is often the better choice because Metod only offers standard connections and few prefabricated options for island lighting. LED strips with dimmers are flexible and can be discreetly installed almost anywhere.

I’m also unsure about the choice of countertop: would it be better to go with a durable solid wood or a low-maintenance quartz composite surface?

Solid wood provides a warmer look but requires more care and is more sensitive in the middle of the island, where a lot of work is done. In Nordic countries, many now prefer quartz composite because its appearance and craftsmanship are nearly on the same level, with better practicality for daily use.
