Hello everyone, I am currently planning a kitchen island using the Ikea Metod system that should provide a lot of storage space without overwhelming the room or losing style. I am especially interested in how to efficiently design such an island so that the storage elements are practical and easily accessible. Additionally, the design should remain modern and appealing, so I would appreciate tips on fronts, countertops, and handles that are both functional and visually fitting. Does anyone have experience with combining Ikea Metod kitchen islands with ample storage? What is the best way to maximize the modules while maintaining a stylish look? I would be grateful for detailed suggestions, especially on how to avoid common problems like poor space utilization or overly bulky islands.

I can only recommend planning the base units with drawers. They are more practical than simple doors because you can access everything much more easily. Additionally, you can use organizers inside to efficiently divide the storage space.

The key to an efficient Metod kitchen island lies in planning with different cabinet heights. For example, tall drawers provide space for pots and larger items, while shallow drawers are ideal for cutlery and kitchen utensils. Additionally, I recommend choosing panels and kickboards that visually lighten the space. A countertop in light wood or stone works especially well, as these surfaces appear modern and are easy to maintain.

The size of the island is critical. The Metod base cabinets have a depth of 60 cm (24 inches) – for an island, I recommend reducing this depth by extending the fronts to about 80 cm (31 inches) if the space allows, to create a generous work surface. Additionally, the distance to the main kitchen should be at least 100 cm (39 inches) to allow for comfortable movement. Too much bulk can overwhelm the space. For storage, it is best to use multifunctional inserts, such as shelves, drawers with internal dividers, or waste sorting systems. Glass fronts or high-gloss elements can also add a sense of visual lightness.

I would like to add that the lighting of a kitchen island is often underestimated. Well-placed LED lighting under the countertop or directly in the area of the drawers increases functionality and supports an elegant appearance. Additionally, an open shelving section on one side offers individual design options, where frequently used kitchen utensils or decorations can be displayed without overcrowding the island.

That's a good point, thanks! Do you think it's easy to integrate lighting with Ikea Metod, or is it better to use a separate solution? Also, I'm unsure about the choice of countertop: should I go for a durable solid wood or a low-maintenance quartz composite surface? What should be especially considered when using it on a kitchen island, especially if there is a lot of storage underneath and it is used daily?
