Hello everyone!
I need the help and opinion of experts:
We are installing kitchen wall tiles measuring approximately 30 x 90 cm (12 x 36 inches) in the area around the cooktop as a focal point. These tiles have a printed design in the style of small vintage tiles and therefore need to be cut as much as possible along the “printed” grout lines. The building is an older property, and the wall to be tiled starts next to a door and ends in a corner, which will be tiled around into a recessed area where cutting is easy. However, the corner is fully visible, as is the wall where the tile arrangement begins. The tiler will start at the corner on the right side, and the tile should align with the top of the base kitchen cabinet below. I hope this is clear so far, and here is my question:
Should the tile end before the end of the kitchen cabinet, or extend slightly beyond it? Or should we cut straight through the pattern instead? In any case, a compromise will be necessary, but which option is best? I welcome all opinions. The tile in question is the Antique Grey from Porcelanosa, and the tiling will be four tiles high, as mentioned, to serve as a feature.

Thank you!

I would measure it first! Basically, a direct edge finish would probably look best, but only if it doesn’t leave a very awkward leftover piece—just a very narrow strip of a partial tile. If you have at least half of one of these “partial tiles,” I think that should be fine. Otherwise, I would rather tile beyond the edge than stop, for example, 5cm (2 inches) short.

Have you considered using Schluter profiles as an edge trim on the side and top, or will this area be covered anyway?

My feeling was also more to let it overlap a little rather than stopping right at the cabinet. My husband thought exactly the opposite ;-)

Based on the measurements, it will probably be like that—the tile would overlap about 2 cm (1 inch), which I think is still okay. Cutting in the middle of the pattern would actually leave only a narrow strip of the design.

We want to install a trim strip on the corner where the tiles end. To the left of the door frame, the painter will work it in; it still needs to be painted and wallpapered.

We also want to skip a trim strip along the top since it’s quite high and no one looks directly at it. The tiles will end exactly at the duct of the recirculating range hood.

Best regards and thank you very much for the quick reply!

I think with a 2cm (0.8 inch) overhang, I would rather cut the last design piece in the middle and end it earlier. But honestly, if possible, I would try to stop before that. An overhang of 2cm (0.8 inch) could also look intentional rather than poorly done.
