Hello,
Yesterday was the first time we started looking into tiles for our new build. We have looked at several options and like a few of them. Now my question is: We haven't requested a price quote for the tiles yet, as we have only just begun to explore tile pricing. In your opinion, what would be a reasonable price for a mid-range tile?
I know tile prices range from €3 up to XXX€, but I would like to get a rough idea.

Thank you very much

Hi „hier könnte dein Name stehen“,

BeHaElja was a bit faster. I would also say that for around 30 euros/sqm (approximately 2.8 USD/sqft) you can already get something decent, and from 40-50 euros/sqm (3.7-4.6 USD/sqft) the luxury tiles slowly start.

But don’t forget the installation costs. Have you already included them in your house expenses? They can easily add another 40 euros/sqm (around 3.7 USD/sqft), meaning it can quickly become more expensive than the tiles themselves!

Best regards,

Andreas

Can this really be said in such general terms?

Since we used a lot of wood-look tiles, the price was a bit higher than €30 (about $32) because you can see the difference in texture between basic and high-quality tiles. For example, our kitchen backsplash measuring 120cm x 60cm (47 inches x 24 inches) cost over €100/m² (about $107/sq ft). On the other hand, the tile price for the utility room and laundry was below €10 (about $11) per square meter.

Installation costs, or the additional expenses charged by the general contractor for non-standard tile sizes and patterns, as well as costs for (stainless steel) edges and corners, baseboards, waterproofing, and non-standard grout colors, can add up significantly.

I don’t remember the exact numbers, but I think we spent roughly €100/m² (about $107/sq ft) all in across all rooms.

What does the building code say, or are you managing the construction through individual contracts?

For my bathroom renovation, I paid between 40 and 50 EUR/m² (4.3 and 5.4 USD/sq ft) for tiles in the 30x60 cm (12x24 inches) format. The floor tiles were at the higher end of the price range due to a higher slip resistance rating (level-access shower). I’m not sure about the prices for the mosaic tiles, as I didn’t need many of those.

PS: I ordered 2-3 extra boxes of each tile to have some reserves in case repairs are needed later and the tiles are no longer available.
