Hello everyone, I am considering whether it is possible to paint Ikea Brimnes furniture—especially dressers and cabinets—to match my interior colors. Does anyone know if this can generally be done without damaging the furniture or causing the surface to look impaired afterward? I am also interested in how much work the painting process would involve, what preparatory steps are necessary (e.g., sanding or priming), and if there are specific paints or coatings that work best, since Brimnes furniture usually has a special laminate finish. I appreciate any firsthand experience, tips, or advice!

Yes, Brimnes furniture can be painted. Important: thoroughly sand the surface to ensure the paint adheres properly. It is best to use a primer and then paint with acrylic or synthetic resin-based paint.

I would like to provide a brief guide on painting Ikea Brimnes furniture. The main challenge is that the surface is melamine-coated, meaning it is very smooth and durable. Therefore:

- Clean the furniture thoroughly to remove grease and dirt.
- Lightly sand with fine sandpaper (around grit 220) to roughen the surface, allowing the paint to adhere better.
- Then apply a suitable primer, especially if you are planning a contrasting color finish.
- For painting, acrylic or alkyd paints are recommended because they adhere well and are durable.
- Lightly sand between paint layers for a smooth finish.

It is important to allow sufficient drying time between steps. With proper preparation, you can achieve a neat and long-lasting result.

For clarification: Brimnes furniture is made of particleboard with a melamine laminate. This laminate is very durable but also smooth, which often makes adhesion challenging. Professional painters recommend sanding between coats and using a special primer, such as an adhesion promoter for plastics. Additionally, spray application is advised, as rollers or brushes can leave visible textures. An alternative approach would be to use adhesive films or specialized furniture films as a paint substitute, which are gentler and do not damage the surface texture.

That explains a lot, thanks. However, I wonder if every melamine-coated surface behaves the same way, or if Ikea uses particularly resistant films here. Have you or anyone else had direct experience with spraying or painting with a roller on Brimnes? Does it work without air bubbles or blistering?

I painted Brimnes dressers with lacquer paint (applied very thinly) using a spray system. Important: Thoroughly sand the furniture first, then apply a primer coat by spraying. I consulted with a specialist retailer to determine which paints are compatible. The result was even, without bubbles or visible defects. Make sure to work in a dust-free environment and allow sufficient drying time, then it will work smoothly.
