Chen-mason20 Jan 2021 09:17I am planning to get a wardrobe from the Ikea PAX series, but I have a special room situation where the standard heights (201 cm, 236 cm, 271 cm) are not ideal. My main question is: Can the height of Ikea PAX wardrobes be adjusted? In other words, is it possible to modify individual components in height or replace them with parts purchased separately to achieve an intermediate or custom height? Are there official or proven methods to handle this, for example by using extensions, additional shelves, or similar solutions? Thanks in advance for any tips and experiences!
The dimensions of the PAX wardrobe frames are indeed standardized and not designed for custom height adjustments. There are three main sizes: 201 cm (79 inches), 236 cm (93 inches), and 271 cm (107 inches) in height. While it is technically possible to shorten the frames, Ikea does not recommend doing so, as it compromises stability and voids the warranty. A common alternative is to combine two or more units of different sizes or place the wardrobes on raised plinths to slightly adjust the height. Additionally, variable interior solutions (such as adjustable shelves) can be used to increase functionality, even though the external height itself cannot be altered.

You can combine individual modules to achieve the desired overall heightI can confirm that! If the standard heights don’t quite fit, try combining smaller PAX modules or adding a baseboard; that might give you the slight height boost you need. I once enhanced a cabinet with a wooden plinth – it actually looked quite nice and made the cabinet very stable. I would generally avoid trimming the frames; it’s better to improvise instead.
As an addition: Although Ikea does not provide official intermediate heights for PAX wardrobes, it is possible to use accessories such as trims or extensions. While this does not change the basic frame height, it can be visually adapted to individual space requirements. It is important that stability is not compromised by this. Additionally, I recommend always checking the assembly instructions and weight loads for different options to avoid any issues.

Can I vary the height of Ikea PAX wardrobes, meaning, is it possible to adjust the height of individual components or replace parts with self-bought ones to achieve a custom or intermediate height? In short and factual terms: Ikea PAX is not modular in height. A frame can technically be cut, but this is not recommended as it compromises stability and voids the warranty.
Intermediate heights are not designed, so the only options are combining existing components or modifying the base (e.g., adding wooden strips to increase the height). Those who require a specific height may want to consider other wardrobe series or custom-made solutions.
In summary: an individual height adjustment of the PAX frames themselves is not intended, and Ikea does not offer solutions that guarantee stability and safety. Alternatives are only “workarounds,” not official solutions.
