Hello everyone,
I am currently planning the assembly of a Pax wardrobe system and trying to optimize the costs as much as possible. The question I have is: Can I save money when building a Pax wardrobe without compromising on quality or functionality?
I am especially interested in tips for purchasing affordable yet suitable shelves, doors, and rails, as well as possible savings on tools or installation. Are there any recommended alternatives to the original parts from Ikea or experiences with used components? Advice on self-assembly versus professional installation would also be helpful.
Maybe there are strategies that are not immediately obvious, such as modular construction, swapping individual parts, or special discount offers. I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!

Regarding buying used: How did you check the compatibility of the used Pax units? The Pax units are fairly standardized, but not all doors and interiors fit every base unit. I compared the product numbers and checked the measurements. Missing rails or fittings can often be re-ordered as spare parts from Ikea at a reasonable price.

whether modular expansions can be realized more cheaply later or if it's better to go for a larger package from the startIn the long run, it is often more cost-effective to expand step by step because you can take advantage of special offers along the way and spread out the purchase costs a bit more.
Interesting point about modular extensions. Personally, a step-by-step build often feels less stressful, including financially. Of course, the effort of a second installation should not be underestimated, but better timing with special offers can really save money.
Ideally, you know your requirements and the space well, so you don’t end up with unnecessary extras.

I wanted to add that when it comes to doors, it can be practical to opt for more affordable options. By choosing doors with plexiglass or wood-look finishes, you can often save some money compared to solid wood or high-gloss versions.
This does change the overall appearance of the cabinet, but in a private bedroom, I find the compromise acceptable, especially when working with a limited budget.

Thank you for your assessments. One additional question regarding installation: Has anyone had such difficulties with the installation that hiring a professional help would be worthwhile, even if it involves extra costs? Or can a generally handy DIY enthusiast manage it on their own?
I want to save costs as much as possible but also want to avoid any trouble due to incorrect installation or damage.

Or can a “normally skilled” DIY enthusiast generally manage it alone? Many manage the assembly alone without problems, provided you take your time and work carefully. The instruction manuals are good, and YouTube videos offer additional help.
However, if you have any doubts or are setting up a large, complex system, professional installation can save nerves and possibly costs for corrections later. It is an investment against future frustration—depending on personal skill.
