Hello everyone, I am currently considering upgrading my Ikea Besta furniture by adding custom-made handles, as I find the standard handles a bit too simple and impersonal. My question is directed at those who have experience with this or can provide informed advice:

Is it possible to enhance Ikea Besta furniture with custom handles without affecting the functionality or stability of the furniture? What materials and fastening methods are suitable to create durable and visually appealing handles? I am also interested in whether changing the handles really results in a significant visual improvement or if it’s better to stick with the original handles to avoid any risks.

I look forward to your opinions and advice!

What are your thoughts on ergonomics – does the usability of drawers change significantly when using unconventional handles?

Ergonomics should not be overlooked. Handles must provide enough space for a comfortable grip – a depth of about 3 cm (1.2 inches) and an ergonomic shape are ideal.

Regarding fasteners, M4 metal screws with sufficient length (at least 15 mm (0.6 inches)) are suitable to ensure stability. Original screws from Ikea are often M4 and 20 mm (0.8 inches) long; your screws should not be much longer than necessary for your handle.

For surface treatment, I recommend finishing wooden handles either with a high-quality hard wax oil or sealing them with clear lacquer. Oil preserves the natural feel better, while lacquer offers stronger protection against scratches.

Be sure to pay close attention to the drill holes when fastening, otherwise the handles will not fit. Please do not improvise, as this could cause damage.

Handles are not only functional but also part of the overall design – I believe it’s a mistake to intervene too heavily here.

Sometimes it’s precisely the contrast in design that creates the appeal. An unusual handle can turn a basic piece of furniture into a real eye-catcher.

Of course, the risk is that not everyone will like it, but for individualists, this is a great approach.
