Deotau2Hello everyone, I am currently considering upgrading my Ikea Besta furniture by adding custom-made handles, as I find the standard handles a bit too simple and impersonal. My question is directed at those who have experience with this or can provide informed advice:
Is it possible to enhance Ikea Besta furniture with custom handles without affecting the functionality or stability of the furniture? What materials and fastening methods are suitable to create durable and visually appealing handles? I am also interested in whether changing the handles really results in a significant visual improvement or if it’s better to stick with the original handles to avoid any risks.
I look forward to your opinions and advice!

Can I upgrade Ikea BESTA furniture with custom-made handles without affecting the functionality or stability of the furniture? In principle, this is possible. The best condition is that the handles fit precisely with the existing drill holes to avoid compromising stability.
For mounting, I recommend using high-quality screws of the same length as the originals, as well as self-locking nuts or washers to ensure a secure hold.
In terms of materials, hardwoods like beech or oak are suitable for a warm, natural appearance. Metal handles are also sturdy and can have a modern look, but they require precise drilling.
Visually, a custom handle can greatly enhance the furniture if the shape and color are well matched. Functional impairments can be avoided if the handles are designed ergonomically.

Especially with Ikea BESTA, the typical clean design is what defines the furniture. DIY handles often look out of place and quickly give the piece an inconsistent appearance.
If you value individuality, it’s better to replace the fronts or choose a completely different series rather than tampering with the handles.
Handles are not only functional but also part of the overall design concept – I believe making major changes here is a mistake.

I believe that when you create something yourself, you can bring in your creativity and enjoy the furniture more. For example, I once made leather cord handles for my BESTA – they were very practical and got a lot of positive comments.
Of course, it takes some courage, but it somehow brings the piece to life. You just have to be honest with yourself about whether you love a DIY result or prefer to stick with clean lines.

I am also interested in your opinions on surface treatment. Is a clear varnish sufficient, or would it be better to use oil?
Additionally: What are your views on ergonomics – does the usability of the drawers change significantly when using unconventional handles?
