ᐅ Is it possible to paint Billy shelves without risking damage to the materials?

prasanGood morning everyone! I am planning to redesign some of my Billy shelves from IKEA and wonder if it is possible to paint these shelves without risking damage to the material.
Specifically, I am interested in whether the MDF panels with the standard finish are compatible with repainting after sanding, and if doing so could affect their stability or surface quality. Are there any special pretreatments that are absolutely necessary, or types of paint that are better suited than others?
I want to avoid the shelves swelling, becoming brittle, or the paint layer not adhering well after painting. Has anyone had experience with the best way to paint these shelves without negatively impacting their function and appearance?
Thank you in advance for your tips and feedback!

Yes, you can paint Billy shelves without damaging the material if you follow the right steps. These shelves are usually made of MDF with a melamine coating or laminate, which needs to be lightly sanded before painting to roughen the surface. This helps the paint adhere better.
It is important to use fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 220 grit) and sand gently so that the surface is not damaged. After sanding, you should apply a primer—preferably a bonding primer for smooth surfaces—to properly prepare the MDF for painting.
Acrylic or water-based acrylic paints work well; they adhere nicely and have less odor. Make sure to apply thin coats and allow each coat to dry thoroughly.
If you want to be cautious, test the process on an inconspicuous area first to see how the material reacts. This way, you can avoid any unpleasant surprises.
Good luck with your project! 🙂

Additionally, I recommend wiping the surface with a damp cloth after sanding to remove dust before applying primer.

Acrylic or water-based acrylic paints are suitable as topcoatsThese are indeed the best choice because they contain fewer solvents that could damage the MDF. Solvent-based paints can soften or degrade the MDF.
A good alternative is also spray paint, as it applies a thin coat and creates an even finish.
In conclusion, if the material is properly prepared—especially by sanding the surface lightly and applying primer carefully—you can paint Billy shelves without worrying about damage.

My advice: prime after sanding and paint in conditions that are not too humid. Humidity can have a huge impact. Sometimes applying very thin coats helps to prevent the paint from “stressing.”
Using a good acrylic paint will keep you on the safe side. And if you pause to think, sanding between coats can help achieve a perfect finish.
Enjoy the painting – it’s definitely worth adding some color to Billy! 🙂
On material compatibility: MDF swells when it gets too moist. Therefore, be sure to use either a sprayable primer or a primer that seals out moisture.
Additionally: Painting is recommended only if the original surface has been removed or at least sanded down. A clear coat on foil/CPL surfaces usually does not last permanently.
Another tip: For better protection and adhesion, you can apply a thin layer of furniture filler before painting. This smooths out imperfections and protects the MDF from damage under later stress.
Conclusion: Yes, Billy-style shelves can be painted without damage—if you pay attention to good preparation and choose the right materials.
