Hello dear forum,

we are currently planning to build a terrace accessible from our kitchen and wanted to ask for your opinion on our idea. We want to remove the window and replace it with a balcony/terrace door. For this, the masonry under the window will need to be removed.

For the terrace, we plan to build a U-shaped frame around with formwork blocks and then fill it with concrete and reinforcing steel. The inside will be filled with construction debris and all the asphalt we want to remove from our driveway, which we will compact thoroughly. This should fill the terrace properly.

On top, we will add a layer of concrete with reinforcing steel, and then depending on the finish, either tiles or terrace slabs.

Has anyone done something similar? Did you face any problems afterwards, or were you satisfied with the result? Here is a picture for illustration.

Best regards and stay healthy

So please, a terrace is nobody else's business.

A terrace of this size only requires a written notification to the local authority. No building permit or approval from the neighbor is needed. It is being built on my property, not theirs.

The written part is basically settled; I am now working on the technical construction planning.

Start relaxed with the door and window.
Once they are installed and the window is properly sealed, you can even walk over pallets into the garden for a few days.

Instead of concrete and steel, you can also use mixed recycled material. Or, as mentioned, simply pad foundations. In my opinion, your options go a bit overboard.
Please dispose of the asphalt properly and avoid experiments. It doesn’t necessarily cost a fortune.
Excavate the soil. Later, 25cm (10 inches) of recycled material, 5cm (2 inches) of gravel plus the thickness of the paving slabs.

By the way, I find a round terrace made with paving slabs and formwork blocks challenging. That will definitely leave wide gaps. 9/11cm (about 3.5 to 4.5 inches) slabs are more suitable here.
