Hello everyone, I am planning to extend my IKEA Metod kitchen with a kitchen island that includes integrated seating, and I want to build it myself. I am looking for the best way to design the island to make efficient use of the available space, incorporate practical storage options, and at the same time create a cozy seating area for 2-3 people. It’s important to me that the construction is stable but not too heavy, ideally using standard IKEA METOD units, while also providing enough legroom on the seating side. Do you have any experience with DIY projects like this or specific tips for planning and execution, especially regarding structural stability, storage surfaces, and seating comfort? Looking forward to your input!

I recommend keeping the seating side as free as possible from base cabinets – if necessary, opt for open shelves to maintain a light and open feel.

I also think that’s very important. I built a Metod kitchen island myself, where we left the seating side completely open. At first, I wasn’t sure if it would be stable enough. But with sturdy brackets and a solid countertop, it’s very stable both when sitting and standing.

Another advantage is that the seating area is easy to clean and you don’t constantly bump into anything while sitting. The open shelves on the opposite side provide enough storage space for cookbooks and dishes.

If you like, I can gladly share how I properly supported the overhang—it really helped us a lot.

An important addition regarding seating: be sure to pay attention to the countertop height and any unevenness in the floor. Even small differences can cause instability. I recommend using adjustable furniture feet to compensate for this, especially for kitchen islands on tiled floors.

Also, you should reinforce the countertop for the seating area from underneath with metal brackets, especially if you plan a large overhang (more than 30-35 cm (12-14 inches)). Without proper support, the countertop can sag over time.

Regarding storage: cabinets with pull-out drawers are great for maximizing space in small areas. Make sure the drawer openings are not obstructed by the placement of the seating.

One more tip about materials: birch wood as a countertop offers good stability but is also prone to water stains. Sealing it with a quality oil or varnish is therefore highly recommended.

How are you planning the electrical connections or outlets at the island? This is often overlooked but very important for kitchen islands.

Good point. If you want to use appliances like a kettle or blender on the island, I strongly recommend integrating outlets into the side panel or even the countertop. There are special inserts available that are easy to install.

Here is a brief checklist to prepare:
- Arrange the outlet connections with the electrician early on
- Carefully plan cable channels and flush-mount boxes
- Consider if you need USB charging stations

All connections should be installed before fitting the countertop, as drilling afterwards is difficult.

This will give you more convenience and flexibility when using the kitchen island later.

Thank you for the valuable tips. The advice regarding electrical fittings and the reinforcement of the countertop is especially helpful for my detailed planning. I will now take the final room measurements and try to create a CAD sketch using the recommended dimensions and heights.

If anyone has suggestions, particularly on seating comfort (e.g., cushions, chair models suitable for the Metod island) or on the final surface treatment of the birch countertop, I would appreciate it. I want to complete the project properly without overlooking anything important.

Thanks again to everyone involved!
