Hello everyone,

I recently stored some vinyl records in my IKEA Kallax shelf, but unfortunately, they warped during storage. These are classic vinyl LPs that developed slight warping due to the narrow compartment size and possibly insufficient stability in the shelf—especially those placed at the very back.

My question is: What methods would you recommend for flattening warped records without damaging the surface or the grooves? Are there specific techniques or tools suitable for cold or warm pressing that work well, or should be avoided? It’s important to me to preserve the sound quality and avoid further damage to the records.

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Hey joonle,

Ah, the tricky issue of warped panels! A classic. Basically, there are two main approaches: some people rely on heat (for example, using a warm windowsill or an oven set to a very low temperature), while others prefer applying pressure over time—placing the panel between two smooth, heavy boards.

I personally like to combine both: first applying some gentle heat (not too hot, or the panel could melt!) and then immediately storing it flat under weight. Taking gradual steps and being patient is important. You want to avoid breaking or further deforming the panel while straightening it.

Good luck—the good old vinyl DIY has its charm!

Hello joonle,

I actually recommend being very cautious with heat. Often, placing the panel in a dark, warm room at around 30-35 degrees Celsius (86-95°F) helps to make the material a bit more flexible without causing deformation.

Afterwards, place the panel between two flat, smooth, and especially heavy surfaces, such as two glass or wooden panels with appropriate weight. It is important that this pressure is applied over several hours to days. Patience really pays off here.

Make sure the panel is not exposed directly to sunlight, as UV rays and excessive heat can cause damage.

If you have a cleaning device for panels, use it beforehand to remove dust and dirt, which will make handling the panel easier.

All the best! 🙂

I would like to get a bit more technical here, as flattening vinyl records requires more than just placing the record between plates.

First, it is important to understand that vinyl can be irreversibly damaged by excessive heat – the optimal temperature range for slight thermal softening is between 50 and 60 degrees Celsius (122 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit), but these temperatures should never be applied directly to the record. Instead, they should be reached in the surrounding environment to allow for gentle adjustment.

The following process has proven effective:

1. Raise the room temperature to around 30-35 degrees Celsius (86-95 degrees Fahrenheit), for example on a sunny windowsill or near a heat source.
2. Allow the record to warm up slowly for 30-60 minutes.
3. Carefully place the record between two smoothed, flat surfaces, preferably with rubber or silicone pads to prevent scratching, and apply an evenly distributed weight (such as a stack of books).
4. Let this setup rest for 24-48 hours.

Important: Excessive pressure or temperatures can cause permanent deformation or surface scratches on the vinyl, which can in the worst case reduce the ability of the stylus to track the grooves accurately.

Also, you should check whether the record is actually made of vinyl and not another type of plastic, as some pressings have different temperature sensitivities.

How severe are the warps exactly? Are all records stored in the KALLAX unit affected or only certain positions? In that case, adjusting the shelving arrangement might help prevent this issue in the future.

Looking forward to your details!

Thank you for the detailed response, Filippo – very helpful!

The distortions actually vary in severity, some are slight waves that don’t completely ruin the sound but are clearly noticeable. Mainly the records at the very back of the shelf, which may have been too tightly wedged or not properly supported, are affected.

I use the KALLAX shelf for a small number of records, so the issue only concerns the records in one compartment with very limited vertical clearance. I suspect the vinyl has expanded and warped slightly due to the light pressure from the shelf bottom and temperature fluctuations.

My idea was to possibly use cushions or wooden strips to better secure the records during storage, but of course that would require some modification first.

What about cold treatment or even vacuum? Has anyone had experience with that? Or is it rather a waste of time and risky?

Thanks again for your assessment.

Hello joonle,

to my knowledge, cold treatment is not a good idea for vinyl records. Vinyl becomes harder and more brittle at low temperatures, which can lead to micro-cracks or breaks. Similarly, vacuum methods are not practical for correcting warps at home and can be potentially dangerous.

In your case, I recommend, as mentioned before, a combination of gentle warming and flat storage. Additionally, storing records vertically, secured with record supports or spacers, helps to reduce warping over time.

If you are planning to adjust your storage anyway, make sure the records are not tightly pressed together and that the KALLAX opening for LPs has enough space—ideally about 32 cm (13 inches) height per compartment.

I hope this helps.
