ᐅ BILLY shelf wall mounting after installation – which anchors are best?

Jomu34Hello everyone, I am planning to mount my IKEA Billy bookcase to the wall afterwards, as I want to prevent it from slipping or tipping over. Unfortunately, my wall is a mix of concrete and drywall (plasterboard), so I’m unsure which anchors would be best suited. The wall surface is not entirely uniform, and I want to be certain that the shelf fixing will hold securely, especially under the weight of books and decorations.
My main question is: which anchors are ideal for safely fixing a Billy bookcase to a mixed wall of concrete and drywall, so that the load is supported over time without causing damage to the wall? I look forward to your experiences and advice, especially if anyone has a similar wall structure or knows alternative solutions. Thanks in advance!

Hello Jomu34, I see you have a mixed wall made of concrete and drywall – that does make things a bit tricky, but it’s manageable. Here is a brief guide:
1. Concrete area: It’s best to use heavy-duty metal anchors (e.g. bolt anchors or universal metal anchors). These provide the strongest hold, especially for somewhat heavier shelves like BILLY.
2. Drywall area: Regular plastic anchors are too weak here. Use special hollow wall or toggle anchors. These expand behind the drywall and prevent pullout.
3. Mixed mounting: If you need to install where drywall meets concrete, try to find a load-bearing spot – ideally anchored directly into the concrete. If that’s not possible, use drywall hollow wall anchors with higher load ratings – often metal toggle anchors are the best choice.
4. Important: Always drill cleanly and test behind with a small drill bit before installing the larger anchor.
Summary: For your BILLY shelf, definitely use metal heavy-duty anchors in the concrete and sturdy hollow wall anchors (metal toggle anchors) in the drywall section. This avoids damage and ensures a secure hold.
If you must mount on an area without concrete, I recommend using multiple anchors to distribute the load. And be sure to check the maximum load rating of the anchors according to the manufacturer.

For concrete, I recommend heavy-duty anchors (metal); for drywall, use special hollow wall anchors such as toggle bolts or metal hollow wall anchors. That’s right, and I’d add: if you consider the wall temperature and show some care with the materials, always use metal anchors for concrete instead of that cheap plastic stuff. The BILLY shelf can be quite heavy, and using the wrong anchors can quickly turn into a shaky mess. 😄
Also, for drywall, I’ve had good experiences with so-called toggle anchors—they open up nicely behind the wall and hold firmly. A small tip: when working with drywall, always drill slightly into empty space first to avoid crumbling.
In my opinion, a securely mounted shelf is the best investment to keep your books from falling off the sofa—and your wall will thank you. 🙂

If you have to rely on a surface without concrete, I would recommend using several anchors for load distribution.Exactly! And I want to add: When mounting on drywall, it’s better to use several small anchors rather than one large one – this distributes the load more effectively. For a BILLY shelf, which is quite wide, I would also consider securing it at multiple points to prevent wobbling.
And hey, a little fun with DIY is allowed! 😉 Last year, I gave my BILLY some extra support with heavy-duty anchors and cavity wall fixings – it holds perfectly, and I have no complaints. Good luck with your screwing!

Marlenepa27 Dec 2020 08:22Hello Jomu34, I’m happy to provide you with an additional explanation so you can safely and confidently mount your BILLY shelf on the wall.
1. Preparation: Use a stud finder or a similar tool to carefully check the wall. This way, you can identify where the concrete is and where the drywall (plasterboard) is.
2. Anchor selection: For concrete, a metal bolt anchor is recommended as it has a high load capacity. For drywall, do not use simple universal anchors; instead, use metal toggle bolts or hollow wall anchors designed for this purpose.
3. Installation: First, drill the hole size specified on the anchor packaging, as this is important for a secure hold. For drywall panels, you can insert toggle anchors that expand behind the wall.
4. Load distribution: Make sure the weight of the fully loaded BILLY shelf with books is distributed over at least two anchor points, preferably more, especially if the wall areas are mostly drywall.
5. Securing: Also use the supplied metal brackets from IKEA, since they turn a simple screw into a really strong connection between the back panel of the shelf and the wall.
I hope this explanation helps with your project! If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.
