Tarludwig20 Feb 2016 08:37Hello everyone,
I want to attach my BILLY shelf to the wall and came across mounting brackets. My question specifically concerns the dimensions of the brackets that are best suited for this shelf.
What dimensions should the mounting brackets ideally have to ensure sufficient stability without being too bulky or oversized? I am particularly interested in the length of the two arms (in cm or mm), the material thickness, as well as any special features regarding the shape or installation that I should keep in mind.
I want to avoid the shelf wobbling or coming loose under load. If anyone has experience with which bracket sizes work best in practice for BILLY shelves, I would appreciate concrete recommendations. Tips regarding screw sizes or suitable wall anchors would also be very helpful.
Thanks in advance!

What dimensions should the mounting brackets ideally have to ensure sufficient stability without being too heavy or oversized?Good question! Here are some tips to help you determine the right size for the mounting brackets of the BILLY shelf.
1. Leg length: Brackets with legs around 40 mm x 40 mm (1.6 inches x 1.6 inches) are usually sufficient. For higher loads, 50 mm x 50 mm (2 inches x 2 inches) can be appropriate, but larger sizes are generally unnecessary.
2. Material thickness: At least 2 mm (0.08 inches) thick steel sheet provides enough strength and prevents bending. Thinner material is not recommended for a shelf of this size.
3. Shape: It’s best to use brackets that allow at least two screws per leg to ensure a secure hold in both the wall and the shelf.
4. Installation: Wall anchors should match the wall type (anchors for drywall or masonry). Proper selection here is also crucial.
Summary: A 40 x 40 mm (1.6 inches x 1.6 inches) bracket made of 2 mm (0.08 inches) steel with at least four screws in total (two per side) is a proven solution for BILLY shelves.
If you have any further questions, I’m happy to help!

An angle bracket measuring 40x40 mm (1.6x1.6 inches) made of 2 mm (0.08 inch) steel with at least 4 screws in total (2 per side) is proven practical for BILLY shelves. This recommendation aligns with common standards. A larger bracket does not provide significant added value but might be visually intrusive or cause issues in tight spaces.
The material thickness should not be less than 2 mm (0.08 inch), as thinner brackets may bend or break under load. Screws should have a diameter of at least 4.5 mm (0.18 inch) and be suitable for the respective wall type.
Also, ensure that the brackets do not protrude too far so the shelf sits flush against the wall.
Potentially relevant: If the shelf is heavily loaded (e.g., with heavy books), stronger brackets or additional supports may be advisable.

The screws should be at least 4.5 mm in diameter (about 0.18 inches) and suitable for the specific wall type.Exactly, and I would add: For hollow walls, always use hollow wall anchors or metal expansion anchors; otherwise, the bracket won’t hold properly.

40 x 40 mm (about 1.6 x 1.6 inches), 2 mm (about 0.08 inches) material thickness, with at least 2 screws per leg are ideal. That matches my experience exactly. Choosing the right screws and anchors is just as important as the size of the bracket itself!
