Hello everyone,

I have a BILLY bookshelf from IKEA with the typical doors that are mounted on the front. I noticed that the doors close too quickly, almost as if there is no damping or resistance. Because of this, the doors slam shut quite loudly, and I’m concerned that the hinges might suffer damage over time.

My question is: Is there a way to adjust or retrofit the doors so they close more slowly and softly? I have already tightened the screws on the hinges slightly, but it didn’t improve the situation. Are there special dampers, different hinges, or tricks to fix this issue?

I look forward to your tips and recommendations, including advice on tools or materials if any retrofitting is necessary. Thanks!

Hello notomeo,

with BILLY shelves that have doors, the rapid closing is often caused by missing or insufficient damping. The factory hinges from IKEA for BILLY do not come with an integrated soft-close function.

A common solution is to retrofit so-called “door dampers” or “soft-close kits.” These small hydraulic or rubber buffers are installed inside the shelf or on the door frame and reliably reduce the closing speed.

Alternatively, you can replace the hinges with soft-close hinges that fit BILLY shelves. Although they require a bit more effort to install, they provide the best convenience without external retrofitting.

Before installation, adjust all screws properly, as loose or overly tight hinges can also cause problems. Tools needed: Phillips screwdriver, possibly a drill with retrofit kits.

In summary:
- Check and adjust hinges
- Retrofit door dampers
- Soft-close hinges as an alternative

This should help you solve the problem permanently.

That is correct. So I wonder: Is retrofitting dampers always advisable? Aren't the BILLY doors designed for quicker closing? I suspect the fast closing is intentional to keep the cost low.

How exactly did you adjust the hinges? The door position can be adjusted in three dimensions, and sometimes a slight shift is enough to improve closing.

Another point: Have you checked whether the doors are truly hanging straight? Misaligned doors close faster or tend to slam shut. The stability of the shelving unit and the surface underneath also play a role.

My advice: Before retrofitting, spend some time properly adjusting the doors. Dampers are a nice solution but are often not necessary.

I can confirm this from my own experience! 🙂

I had the same problem – my BILLY doors also closed very quickly and made quite an unpleasant noise.

That’s exactly what I did, and I was really impressed by how much the quality of the shelf improved! There are various kits available online that are inexpensive and very easy to install.

Just remove the door slightly, install the damper, put it back on, and you’re done! Now the doors close almost silently, almost like much more expensive furniture.

For everyone who has this problem, I can only recommend: Give it a try, it’s really worth it! Adjusting the hinges didn’t help me at all—only the damper made a difference. Good luck!
