Hello everyone,

I am currently considering expanding my IKEA Billy bookshelf with a self-installed lighting circuit. Specifically, I am thinking about installing LEDs directly inside the shelf to better illuminate the interior and possibly control them via a switch or motion sensor. This raises several questions for me, especially regarding safety, effort, and practicality:

1. Does it actually make sense to create a dedicated electrical circuit or wiring for lighting in a piece of furniture like this?
2. How do you assess the effort involved and the possible risks—particularly concerning electrical safety and compliance with standards?
3. Are there ready-made solutions that might be better suited?

I look forward to hearing your opinions and experiences! Is such a DIY project really advisable or more of a potential hazard?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

regarding the topic "BILLY shelf DIY: Self-installed lighting circuit – useful or not?":

From an electrical engineering perspective, installing a lighting circuit in a piece of furniture is generally feasible, but there are some important points to consider:

- The electrical installation must comply with the applicable VDE standards (German Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies), especially for permanently installed wiring.
- Since the furniture is not primarily designed for electrical installations, protective measures against moisture, mechanical stress, and cable damage are essential.
- Consider whether you want to run a separate wiring circuit or use a plug-in socket solution – the latter is usually simpler and allows for safe operation.

Functionally, having dedicated lighting in the shelf can add a lot of charm and benefits, for example, better visibility of contents, indirect lighting, and automatic switching.

The effort involved is not insignificant if it is to work correctly, safely, and permanently. If you do not have electrical training, I strongly recommend having at least the connection checked by a professional.

Advantage of ready-made solutions: IKEA itself offers LED modules for shelves that are easy to install and safely certified.

My conclusion: DIY is possible and can be sensible if safety and technical requirements are met. Otherwise, prefabricated systems are preferable.

If you don’t have much knowledge of electrical engineering, avoid installing circuits yourself. Power strips or LED strips with plugs are much safer and easier.

Otherwise: Insulate well, avoid exposed wiring, and use certified components.

I would like to bring some structure here and address a few common mistakes when installing a dedicated lighting circuit in the BILLY shelf.

1. Planning:
Before handling any cables, you should clearly determine the lighting load, how the supply cable will be routed, and whether a switch or motion sensor makes sense.

2. Cables and connections:
Use at least NYM-J cables or simple flat ribbon cables for low voltage, not unsafe extension cords. It is important that all connections are made securely – using connectors with strain relief or terminal blocks.

3. Power source:
The cable must not be connected directly to a socket but ideally to a protected circuit (e.g., one with an RCD/GFCI).

4. Safety measures:
Do not use exposed wires. Avoid open cable channels and ensure sufficient protection against damage when placing or moving items.

5. Use of LED modules:
Modern 12V DC LED strips are usually easier and safer to install. An external power supply powers the shelf, protecting against electric shocks.

6. Standards and regulations:
DIY installations in domestic settings are permitted as long as they are safe. If you are unsure, it is better to consult a qualified electrician.

Summary: Installing a dedicated lighting circuit in the BILLY shelf is definitely useful and can create great effects, but safety must come first. Solid planning and professional execution are essential.

I can only agree with that! Especially when it comes to self-made projects, you should never compromise on safety.

I have also installed a BILLY shelf with LED lighting – but using prefabricated LED strips powered by a power supply unit. A motion sensor behind the door provides convenient on and off switching.

This is a very important point. There can be problems later on with warranty or insurance claims if the installation was not done properly.

My advice: proceed step by step, check all components before installation, and have everything inspected. That way, the DIY project is really enjoyable and safe.

I can understand the desire for built-in lighting in the BILLY shelf, but I also have concerns regarding durability and sustainability.

Having an integrated lighting circuit often means long-term maintenance and potential issues if you rearrange furniture or renovate.

I agree with this and would add that a modular solution is preferable in case something breaks.

I recall a project where the hardwired installation was well-intentioned, but I often faced restrictions during use, especially regarding adaptability.

So, for me, the question is: Are you after appearance only, or also flexibility? If the latter, I would suggest a separately switchable circuit with a plug.

I would also be interested in hearing other experiences here.
