ᐅ Retrofitting a Door in a Built-in Shelf Unit – What Should You Consider?

DurmusseHello everyone, I am planning to add matching doors to my existing Billy shelf, which I assembled some time ago without doors. Since the instructions for the doors are usually meant for initial assembly, I have the following question: What should I pay special attention to when mounting the doors afterwards to ensure both stability and appearance are maintained? I am particularly interested in whether I should use any special techniques or additional supports because the shelf is already standing, or if there might be issues with the drilling points. Any advice on the correct alignment of the hinges and tips for handling the already installed back panel would also be very helpful. Thanks for your experience and suggestions!

Drill holes in the already assembled shelf carefully to prevent damage to the material. It is best to keep the back panel in place; otherwise, the stability will be compromised. If necessary, use small wooden wedges for a perfect fit.

Could there be problems with the drilling points? Yes, that’s important. The board has already been loaded and moved. When installing afterward, you can’t just drill without care – the material thickness and hinge placement must be correct, otherwise you risk cracks or a warped door appearance.

It’s also important to ask: Are these the original doors with matching hole spacing, or are you installing third-party doors? These might require different positioning.
Regarding the appearance: If you drill more aggressively, you should fill and paint the holes afterward, otherwise they will remain visible. Do you already have a drill guide set for hinges? That makes the job much easier.

That’s the only way the door will fit perfectly later and won’t stick. The load from the door and hinges can cause issues during retrofitting if you’re not careful.

Tips for correct hinge alignment Hinge pins must be installed exactly perpendicular and flush during assembly; otherwise, the door will catch or stick. Adjustable hinges offer some leeway, but especially when retrofitting, you need to be precise.
