Hello everyone, I have a Billy bookshelf from Ikea that unfortunately has several small paint scratches in different spots. I’m wondering what the best way is to repair these so they are not noticeable and the surface underneath is not damaged. Are there special touch-up pens or home remedies that work well? Also, should the area be cleaned, sanded, or primed before repairing? I want to be as gentle as possible since the bookshelf seemed undamaged so far, and I don’t want to redo the entire finish. Does anyone have experience with retouching fine scratches in the paint on a Billy bookshelf? Thanks in advance!

Oh, that’s really frustrating when such a nice Billy shelf has paint scratches! 🙂 My tip: Check with Ikea, they often offer touch-up pens for exactly these cases – they’re very practical and usually match the color quite well! Otherwise, test it first on an inconspicuous corner. It’s important to clean the area properly beforehand, ideally with a lint-free cloth and some isopropanol. Then apply the touch-up pen lightly and let it dry thoroughly. Small scratches almost disappear like magic! Good luck, you can do it! :-)

Yes, paint markers from IKEA or hardware stores work well. Clean the surface beforehand, do not sand. Done.

It is interesting to see that touch-up paint pens are mainly recommended here. However, I wonder how precise they actually are for small scratches. Some users report that the paint pen itself can make the surface uneven, which then becomes more noticeable.

Applying it thinly is clear, but how do you avoid visible transitions or changes in gloss level with this method?

Perhaps very fine sanding with very fine-grit sandpaper before applying the paint could help smooth the edges? Before resorting to simple home remedies, one should consider whether a light repainting process might be better than just spot repairs.

Ah, good question! What I’ve always done is lightly polish the area first, then apply the touch-up paint very sparingly. After it dries, I gently rub over it with very fine sandpaper (around 1500 grit) to prevent the spot from looking too hard or glossy. This smooths the surface quite well and removes small transitions.

As a supplement: If you want to subtly repair scratches on the finish of a Billy shelf, I recommend the following procedure:

1. Clean the area with isopropanol or a mild solvent to remove dirt and grease.
2. If the surface is heavily damaged, gently scuff the area with a very fine sanding pad (at least 1200 grit).
3. Use a color-matched acrylic or lacquer pen specifically designed for furniture surfaces.
4. After drying, carefully sand with ultra-fine sandpaper (1500–2000 grit) and then blend the surface with a polish or furniture conditioner.

Note: Before repairing, check if the Billy shelf has a special powder coating or lacquer finish, as household remedies or standard touch-up pens may not adhere properly.

Although these steps require more effort, they ensure a less noticeable result than using simple touch-up pens alone.
