Hello dear forum members,

A basement from the 1960s is due for a well-deserved repaint, both the walls and the floor.

The existing paint is the original first coat, consisting of dispersion paint on the walls and ceiling, as well as standard floor paint, which is largely worn off in the trafficked areas.

With a significantly raised groundwater level, some seepage through the basement floor can be expected; the last such occurrence was about 25 years ago. Generally, the basement is dry and free of mold, except for minor moisture damage (peeling paint, soft plaster surface) in the former drying cellar.

The hired painter recommends treating the moisture damage with a primer, then applying two coats of dispersion paint (the most expensive Alpina brand) to the entire basement. The basement floor is planned to be coated with synthetic resin paint (epoxy paint).

Is this planned approach optimal?

P.S.: Silicate paint does not seem possible due to the existing, well-adhering dispersion paint.

No idea, the painter probably doesn’t use paint from Alpina. A small business owner I know said it’s more than enough. For the basement, the brand is less important to me.

I personally prefer a paint that has already been used in the apartment, especially since further work needs to be done there: Brillux ELF 1000.

My question is less about the brand of the dispersion paint and more about the use of dispersion paint in the basement and epoxy paint for the basement floor of a 1960s house with occasional water seepage.

Is this okay, or is there a better alternative?

I am especially uncertain about using epoxy paint for the basement floor. It would be great if someone from this knowledgeable forum could either encourage me or advise against it.

A heartfelt thank you in advance.

Why? I don’t understand that.

Epoxy resin paint.

Isn’t that basically a two-component system and sealing?

Brillux has already been used in the apartment; it’s not cheap but gave good results. Actually, I don’t care much about the specific paint or manufacturer, especially in the basement. It just needs to serve its purpose: good coverage and suitability for a 1960s basement. I am open to recommendations.

As far as I understand, yes.

The painter, who claims to specialize in building protection, recommends an epoxy resin coating for the basement floor because it is vapor-permeable but not water-permeable.
My concern with the rather unusual epoxy resin paint is whether any possible “side effects” are compatible with the old basement, which occasionally experiences groundwater infiltration.
