Good evening everyone!
Although it’s not time for us yet, the planning is already underway in my mind. 😉
Our terrace will face north. We are thinking about concrete slabs. Usually, there is a gravel bed underneath, as far as I know. However, I have read that north-facing terraces often struggle with constant dampness due to the lack of sunlight. Would a gravel bed still be the best option in this case? Or is there a better solution to prevent moisture?
Thanks, and have a great evening everyone!

The real question is, how much sun does your area receive? How tall is the house? Does sunlight come from the east and west as it moves?
Basically, the only “problem” is that the patio stones tend to turn green, but this can be managed in springtime.

Only a south- or west-facing terrace.

We have two full floors and a building height of over 7 meters (23 feet).
I also read about green roofing, which honestly is not our biggest concern and is relatively easy to address.
However, I read that moisture can accumulate under the terrace during rain and high humidity, and due to the lack of sunlight, it doesn’t dry or dries very slowly, leading to permanent dampness. Therefore, my question is whether a gravel base would help with this or be rather counterproductive.

Our north-facing terrace still receives a bit of sunlight, with long hours of sun on summer late afternoons and early evenings. The sunset is also in the northwest. It’s not as dark a spot as one might think.
