Hello everyone,

I would like to open a discussion on a topic where I’m hoping to get your experiences and tips: Are there any upcycling tricks or methods that work particularly well with Ikea Hemnes fronts?

I plan to not just repaint my Hemnes dressers and cabinets but to enhance the material and design in a sustainable and creative way, without compromising the original stability or functionality. Are there any proven techniques for altering the fronts – such as specific sanding or painting methods, adding special hardware, or even creating textured surfaces?

I’m also interested if anyone has experience combining the fronts with other materials like wood, metal, or fabric. What preparations are necessary to ensure paint or other materials adhere properly?

Looking forward to your advice and an engaging exchange!

Yes, there are several well-tested approaches:

- Preparation: The surface of Hemnes fronts is usually made of foil-covered engineered wood, so thorough sanding with fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 220 grit) is necessary to roughen the foil and improve paint adhesion.

- Primer: Use a plastic-based bonding primer, which ensures better adhesion between the foil and the paint.

- Painting: Water-based acrylic paints work well because they do not yellow and remain relatively flexible. Apply several thin coats.

- Handles and fittings: Replacing the handles with vintage or industrial-style ones can give the dresser a completely new character.

- Combinations: Attaching wooden strips or metal frames to the fronts is possible if they are cleaned thoroughly and evenly beforehand.

Pay attention to drying times at every step and ensure good ventilation.

If you like, I can provide detailed product recommendations.

That really makes a big difference! I just upgraded a Hemnes dresser with brass handles myself, and it looks fantastic 😄.

I would also recommend experimenting with chalk paint. It creates beautifully matte surfaces and can be easily sealed with wax or clear varnish.

For a more personalized touch: apply decoupage using matching papers or fabrics to the drawer fronts, then seal them – perfect for unique pieces! It’s amazing how versatile the Hemnes can be customized.

Don’t be afraid to try things out and have fun upcycling!

To answer this question precisely, it is important first to identify the exact material the Hemnes fronts are made from – they are usually made of MDF with either a veneered or painted finish, or covered with a laminate film.

The most important step in upcycling is proper surface preparation:

- Sand with 180-220 grit sandpaper until the surface appears matte.
- For laminate-covered fronts, degrease first using alcohol or a specialized vinyl cleaner.
- Apply a high-quality primer specifically designed for plastics.

For painting, acrylic paints as well as specialized furniture or spray paints from hardware stores are suitable, with attention to lightfastness and scratch resistance.

Fronts can also be modified through subtle profiling, for example by adding tailored wooden trim fixed with construction adhesive and small nails or brads. It is important to consider the added weight to prevent warping of the front and avoid overloading the hinges.

An elegant option is also the use of special design films for wrapping, available at DIY stores – this allows customization of pattern or color with minimal tools.

Finally, if the upcycling is intended for “furniture flipping,” it is advisable to keep the original screws from the handles in case they need to be reused.

Are precise furniture dimensions or the model year of the fronts available? This information would help narrow down the relevant techniques.
