Hello everyone,

I am currently working on assembling a Malm shelf and wonder if there are any tools or aids that can significantly simplify this process. Specifically, I am interested in tools that help with precise alignment of the parts, secure screwing, and preventing mistakes during assembly. Are there any special tools that make this assembly noticeably more efficient or accurate, perhaps compared to standard tools like a cordless screwdriver or hammer?

I’m also thinking about angle guides, screw clamps, or other helpers that are often overlooked in a typical assembly process. Does anyone have experience and can share advice on which tools are really necessary to make the assembly stress-free and tidy? Thanks in advance for your input!

Hey nefimin :-)

“Are there tools or aids that can make this process significantly easier?” – great question! From my own experience, a ratcheting screwdriver or a small cordless drill with adjustable torque settings can be real game changers. Most flat-pack furniture sets come with lots of screws, and using a standard screwdriver can take ages.

Also, a spirit level is definitely helpful. Especially for shelves, you don’t want them to hang unevenly later. Sometimes I also use a socket wrench—it gives a better grip when screws are set quite deep. And if you’re up for a little challenge, try a clamp or screw holder that keeps the parts in place while you screw—saves nerves and finger joints!

In short: with the right tools and a bit of patience, assembling is no rocket science. Good luck, and if you have any more questions—just ask!

Cordless screwdrivers with adjustable torque settings are real gamechangers.

This is an important point I would like to add: A cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque control prevents over-tightening screws and thus avoids damage to the wood. This is often the critical issue with IKEA furniture like Malm.

Additionally, I recommend a good Phillips screwdriver bit that doesn’t wear out easily, as IKEA screws are known to strip quickly. A protractor or a small miter guide can also be useful if you want to align the furniture precisely.

Not to forget: carefully studying the assembly instructions and sorting the parts beforehand is essential. While not a traditional tool, it is just as important for a smooth assembly process.

Those who pay attention to these details will be able to assemble efficiently and cleanly.

I would like to provide a brief summary and overview of the tools that can actually make assembling a Malm shelf unit easier:

1. Cordless drill with adjustable torque: As mentioned, very helpful, especially when you have to drive in large numbers of screws.

2. Spirit level: To check that everything stays level, particularly for the shelves.

3. Clamps or locking pliers: Help to securely hold individual parts together while screwing, which often significantly improves accuracy.

4. Angle measuring tool or miter box: For precise 90-degree angles, especially if you want a clean edge.

5. Phillips screwdriver (of good quality) for smaller or hard-to-reach screws.

6. Snap-on driver bits: They make driving screws easier and faster.

I strongly recommend carefully reading the assembly instructions and sorting all the parts well before starting to avoid mistakes or mix-ups.

Problems often occur when screws are overtightened or parts are connected too early or incorrectly – here, a torque setting on the cordless drill helps prevent damage. If anyone has other tips, I would be happy to hear additional suggestions.
