DaaidanHello everyone, I have a KALLAX shelf from IKEA standing on a relatively soft floor, specifically on a vinyl floor with some padding underneath. Unfortunately, the weight of the shelf is causing indentations in the floor, which I would like to prevent. My question is: Are there specific products or effective protective measures that can be placed under KALLAX shelves to protect soft flooring? I’m looking for solutions that genuinely work and are not just compromises. Has anyone had experience with this or can provide specific recommendations? Thanks in advance!
Hello Daaidan,
I can gladly provide you with a brief guide on how to prevent pressure marks on your KALLAX unit when placed on a soft floor. First of all, it’s important to distribute the weight of the shelf as evenly as possible.
1. Make sure the shelving feet rest on a large, flat protective pad. Suitable options include hard plastic sheets, rubber mats, or felt pads that are at least 5 mm (0.2 inches) thick.
2. Ensure the protective pad does not slip. This is especially important on smooth vinyl flooring, otherwise the shelf might slide around.
3. If you can’t find ready-made sheets, you can also layer several sheets of felt and cut them to size.
Tip: Check for any pressure marks after a few weeks and replace the pads if needed.
I hope this helps a bit.

Make sure the shelf feet rest on a large, flat protective pad.Exactly, and I’d add: If you want to upgrade them a bit, use felt pads like those for chairs, which are even available in extra-large sizes. They’re great, prevent the shelf from slipping, and protect the floor. Plus, they’re easy to replace if anything wears out. 🙂
It also looks better visually – after all, we don’t want the floor protection to look out of place under your stylish KALLAX. 😉

Plastic floor protection sheets for furniture.Thank you, that sounds reasonable. Can you recommend specific products or brands?

Felt pads, like the ones used for chairs, are even available in extra-large sizes. How large are these pads usually? I’m not sure if they will fit under the 11cm (4.3 inches) wide KALLAX shelf feet.

Make sure the protective mat doesn’t slip. That’s a good point. Are there non-slip versions available?
