Hello everyone,
I have a question regarding the load limits for IKEA Hemnes drawers. Specifically, I am interested in whether there are official specifications or recommendations from IKEA about the maximum weight each drawer in the Hemnes series can hold.
I plan to use the drawers for heavier items, such as file folders or kitchen utensils. Therefore, it is important for me to know if the drawers can safely support a certain weight without damage or affecting their functionality.
Does anyone have experience with this or can point to sources that provide information about the maximum load capacity of these drawers? I am also interested in practical tips for care and use to ensure their durability.
Thanks in advance!

Hello Timichen,
I understand your concern. IKEA Hemnes drawers do not have an explicitly stated maximum load limit, as is the case with some other furniture lines. However, the material and construction are designed for normal household use, meaning light to medium-weight items like clothing or kitchen utensils work well.
If you plan to store file folders or heavier items, I recommend distributing the weight across several drawers.
In general, drawers should not be overloaded, as the sliding rails are usually tested for a load of around 15 kilograms (33 pounds).
It is also important to avoid fully extending the drawer when it is heavily loaded to prevent it from falling out or causing damage to the furniture.

Hey Timichen,
I’ve been loading my Hemnes dresser with all kinds of items for years – from towels to cookbooks. Officially, IKEA doesn’t specify anything concrete, but these units easily support up to 10 kg (22 lbs). Of course, you shouldn’t fill a drawer completely with heavy items like stones, or it might get out of hand. 😅
If you want to store binders, I’d recommend not putting more than two binders per drawer. That way, everything stays smooth when opening and closing.

Humorously speaking, the Hemnes drawers are like me – they can handle more than you’d expect! 😄
But seriously, overloading them with significantly more than 15 kg (33 lbs) is not recommended. Otherwise, you might end up unable to close them properly or lose stability. It’s better to sort items more frequently and distribute them across multiple drawers.
