Is there a standardized or well-documented guide specifically for customizing IKEA Hemnes furniture?

I’m not just referring to simple modifications like adding new handles or repainting, but also more complex alterations to improve functionality and appearance – for example, adding extra compartments, installing lighting, or changing the proportions.

I’ve seen several DIY projects, but I’m looking for a reliable step-by-step guide or a collection of best practices tailored to the materials and construction of the Hemnes range.

Does anyone have experience or tips on the best approach, possibly including recommendations for specialized tools that work well? Thanks in advance!

Hello tanaja,

Regarding your question about whether there is a standardized guide for IKEA HEMNES furniture modifications: To my knowledge, IKEA does not officially provide a manual for such purposes. However, the DIY community has established some common practices, which I would like to outline for you in a structured way:

- Materials and tools: HEMNES is mainly made from solid wood, usually pine, which is well suited for modifications but is sensitive to moisture and temperature. For remodeling or tuning, I recommend a high-quality cordless drill with various bits, fine saws, sandpaper in different grits, as well as wood glue and filler.

- Step-by-step modifications: Many start with interchangeable handles or sanding and repainting, then move on to more extensive changes, such as cutting out shelves or installing LED lighting systems.

- Special tips: If you want to add lighting, 12V LED strips are recommended because they are easy to integrate and do not generate much heat. Converting drawers to soft-close can also be achieved with suitable hardware.

I can gladly prepare a sketch or a list of the most important modification steps if you like.

Typical mistakes in such projects include neglecting the wood grain (e.g., drilling in spots where the fibers may split) and insufficient surface preparation, which ultimately affects the appearance significantly.

If you have specific plans you want to implement, just let me know, and I can provide more targeted assistance.

There is no official IKEA guide for furniture customization of the HEMNES. The best instructions can usually be found in blogs or DIY forums. Simply search for "HEMNES customization" or "HEMNES hacks." For more extensive modifications, good tools and patience are essential.

I can only agree with that! If you like, you can also install small lights in hidden spots; it really brightens up the HEMNES. And it’s not as complicated as you might think. A bit of creativity and maybe some gluing here and there – tada, your customized furniture is ready!

Such a guide definitely inspires a bit of tuning, doesn’t it? 😉

A standardized guide? IKEA already plans their products quite thoroughly, so expecting something “official” for tuning seems unrealistic. But it does spark creativity: almost everyone who modifies HEMNES has their own approach – and that’s exactly what makes it interesting.

I bet there are more HEMNES variations for each piece of furniture than original units in your area. So you either start with the basics yourself (sanding, repainting) or dive straight into a world of hands-on improvisation – without a guide.

Just a thought: maybe you want to break away from the “standard”? From what I see, the most important resources are practical experiences shared in forums, YouTube videos, and community galleries. Whether you call that an official “guide” is another question.
