sabrinaan6 Jul 2017 18:23Hello everyone, I have been looking at various Ikea Platsa furniture for my home, and I’m especially interested in whether this system includes models or variations specifically designed with additional storage options.
I’m not only referring to the basic modules but also to practical solutions like hidden compartments, clever interior fittings, or extensions that create extra storage space without necessarily requiring more external room.
Does anyone have experience or tips on how to optimize the PLATSA system for increased storage? Are there official add-ons or creative DIY solutions that have proven effective?
Thanks in advance for your input!

Hello Sabrinaan,
to answer your question in detail: The PLATSA system from Ikea is designed to offer maximum flexibility in terms of size and configuration. There are various modular options that optimize storage space, but there are no specific furniture pieces with hidden or unusual storage compartments, as you might find from other furniture manufacturers.
The following points are particularly important for additional storage space with PLATSA:
- Choosing modules with different depths: behind the shallower modules, you can cleverly store cables or flat items
- Drawer inserts: by default, there are shelves, but with additional drawer inserts you can create compartments and keep things organized
- Combination of doors and open compartments: this allows you to expand storage while also displaying or hiding items
Technically, all components are standardized, so you can build your own constructions, but that requires some DIY skills.
I would be interested to know how large your room really is and if you are planning to place the furniture against a specific wall or corner? Depending on this, vertical use (building higher) can also significantly increase storage space.
If you like, I can also share some tips for optimally planning the interior to maximize storage capacity – for example, using boxes inside or additional shelf dividers.

One tip from me: make full use of the modular options and combine cabinets with drawers – this way you create both order and more storage space.
And don’t worry, installation is easy! So to everyone who wants more storage – take the time to put together your own unique solution! 😊

I have used various PLATSA components myself and found that hidden or invisible compartments are not literally built in.
But what works really well are interior organizers or extra removable boxes that fit nicely inside the units. Often, DIY partitions also help to use the storage space more efficiently without increasing it.
It might feel a bit makeshift at times, but the flexibility of PLATSA makes it possible. This is especially advantageous for small apartments—you just need to approach it with some patience.
Do you have specific items in mind that you want to store? That can help in recommending the best storage solution.
I think PLATSA is like a blank canvas for storage ideas – it really lets you get creative! 😄
Some people use extra boxes, others build their own dividers, or combine components with casters – that way, the wardrobe can even become mobile.
And don’t worry: the modules are quite flexible and sturdy, so every little compartment can be used cleverly.
If you want storage without sacrificing much space, you should consider making use of vertical space – maybe a tall cabinet with doors plus some drawers?
Personally, I even filled the space above my wardrobe with small storage boxes that hardly anyone notices but hold a lot!
Have fun planning! If you like, I can also share some of my little “storage secrets” with you.
