Hello everyone,

I am currently planning a new bedroom and considering buying an Ikea Pax wardrobe. What is particularly important to me is whether any of the Pax wardrobe models come with extra deep shelves or at least offer the option to adjust the shelf depths individually.

My idea behind this is that I want to store some larger and bulkier items (e.g., bedding boxes, travel bags, or photo albums) that often don’t fit well with the usual shelf heights and depths.

So, are there specifically extra deep shelves available as standard options or perhaps as special accessories for Ikea Pax wardrobes? Or do such deep shelves need to be custom made? If anyone has experience with deeper or wider shelf surfaces within a PAX system, I would greatly appreciate any tips or advice.

Thanks for your help!

Hello Susanne,

I think your question makes a lot of sense, as I’ve also wondered whether bulkier items can fit inside Pax. From my experience, Ikea offers two standard depths for Pax wardrobes: 35 cm and 58 cm (14 inches and 23 inches). The 58 cm (23 inches) depth is quite spacious and might work well for your boxes and storage bins.

However, I haven’t come across any shelf inserts that are deeper than that. Of course, you can try ordering deeper shelves separately or modify them yourself, but that would be more of a DIY solution.

I understand your wish to find an option that works without much extra effort, especially when a lot of storage space is needed. That’s why it would be great to hear more experiences here.

Hello Susanne,

A detailed look at the Pax system shows that the product line has clear limitations regarding depth. Pax primarily comes with two carcass depths (35 cm (14 inches) or 58 cm (23 inches)). The shelves are designed to fit these carcasses. An extra deep shelf significantly exceeding 58 cm (23 inches) is not offered by Ikea as a standard option.

In theory, it is possible to make the shelves yourself since the shelf pin holes are standardized. However, this requires some craftsmanship skills. Another option would be to combine deeper carcasses and use drawers or boxes that fit the deeper variant.

In summary: There are no officially sold "extra deep" shelves in the Pax range, only two relatively clear depth sizes to choose from. For very special cases, custom-made solutions or additional storage furniture are the only options. I hope this helps!

Additionally, I would like to point out that Ikea PAX systems are mainly offered with depths of 35 cm (14 inches) for the narrow version and 58 cm (23 inches) for the deep version. The available shelves are standardized for these dimensions, so there are no regular shelves deeper than 58 cm within the range.

For storing larger, bulky items, I recommend selecting the 58 cm deep cabinets and using modular divisions such as drawers or larger boxes. Customization is only possible through cutting to size yourself or using third-party manufacturers.

In short: Extra deep shelves as ready-made PAX components are not available; the maximum depth is 58 cm.

I agree with this assessment – I have a PAX with a depth of 58 cm (23 inches), and I found that this is sufficient for most larger items.

If you really need to store bigger or bulkier objects, the usual options are:
- Customizing with tailor-made shelves that you cut and paint yourself
- Combining with other furniture pieces that offer greater depth

The system is very flexible, but it is not designed for extremely deep shelves. Especially when special storage needs are involved, this should be taken into account when purchasing.

For regular clothing, boxes, and containers, however, the offered depths are often adequate.
