Hello everyone, I have a quite specific question that I would like to discuss here: Are there durable replacement parts for the Malm series from IKEA, especially regarding the drawer systems and connectors? I feel that many of the original replacement parts tend to wear out or break after some time. I am interested to know if anyone here has experience with more robust alternatives or general tips on how to significantly improve the durability of this furniture. I am not only thinking about original replacement parts but also third-party or modified solutions if they are better suited. Thanks in advance!

Regarding your question: Original replacement parts for Malm furniture are available from IKEA, but they are often made with rather thin materials. For durable replacement parts, I recommend upgrading the screws and fittings to stainless steel right away. For drawer rollers, sometimes third-party rollers perform better.

This is a great topic! 🙂 Some time ago, I completely replaced the drawer slides of my Malm dresser with metal rollers – a huge difference! Much more durable, and opening the drawers is now a real pleasure. You can really improve it a lot, give it a try! 😃

From a technical perspective, the original fasteners used in Malm furniture are designed primarily for cost efficiency rather than maximum durability. The thin screws and plastic connectors often withstand only limited stress. A practical solution is to reinforce certain joints with high-quality metal brackets or wooden connector strips. For drawer systems, ball-bearing rollers or metal inserts are significantly more robust. A complete upgrade here results in a noticeably longer service life. Conducting a thorough search for suitable replacement parts from specialized furniture fittings suppliers is recommended.

That sounds great, what puhvin and toril wrote! 🙂 For everyone who also wants something durable: I had metal corner brackets custom-made by a carpenter, which are very sturdy and still hold everything firmly together even after years. Just see if something like that is worthwhile for you. Wishing you good luck and enjoyment with your project!

I find this concerning. It would be interesting to know if there are any specific load tests or user statistics that systematically confirm this weakness. Perhaps the durability also depends heavily on usage and not just on the material or construction method? The topic of metal rollers and wood connectors makes sense, but I recommend including application-oriented data sources or user reports in order to provide well-founded recommendations.
