legabeI am currently planning to customize my Ikea Pax wardrobes to be more individual and functional, especially inside. I am particularly interested in the question: Are there any specific DIY ideas or proven methods for designing or modifying the inner components of Ikea Pax wardrobes?
I am already using the usual shelves and hanging rods but am looking for inspiration on how to adjust the interior elements myself—such as adding extra compartments, special storage solutions, or small modifications like drawers or organizers that are not part of the standard setup but fit well within the system.
How do you approach this? Are there practical tips for implementation, materials, or tools? I look forward to your experiences and ideas, especially creative solutions that are both practical and visually appealing.

Yay, great topic! I really love how much you can get out of the Pax interior elements with a bit of creativity! 😄
Personally, I’ve divided my Pax wardrobes with extra wooden boxes and custom-built drawers, which I’ve fitted with small casters so I can easily pull them out. This makes the interior much more flexible! I also use clamp strips that attach to the sides to hang accessories or jewelry – super practical and it looks nice, too!
Speaking of tools: A cordless drill, jigsaw, and wood glue are my basics. If you want to build high-quality wooden boxes, use thin plywood, as it’s easy to work with and looks elegant.
Stick with it, it’s really fun and gives your Pax that final touch! Good luck 🙌

To the point: The internal components of the Ikea Pax system are relatively flexible in their basic configuration but limited when it comes to specific interior divisions. For a DIY approach, I recommend the following methods that have proven effective in practice:
- Using modular drawer frames, which can be purchased separately, to make efficient use of storage space.
- Adding extra shelves made from lightweight MDF or plywood panels, precisely cut to size and fixed with shelf supports.
- Installing clamp strips or hook rails on the side panels to keep accessories or smaller items organized.
- Using soft-close drawer slides to enhance comfort.
It is important that these modifications do not compromise the cabinet’s structural stability and load capacity. Material thickness and fastening elements are key factors here. Accurate measurements and prior planning are essential to ensure a perfect fit.

How exactly did you secure the boxes on the sides? Do you use special rails for that or another method?
I'm also curious whether the rolling system has proven reliable for you—especially regarding weight capacity and durability. I'm considering a similar solution since the standard drawers in the Pax are a bit too small for my needs.

I also want to avoid reducing the wardrobe’s flexibility by making too many modifications.
In response to legabe’s concerns regarding stability and flexibility, I would like to add some additional facts:
Although DIY modifications can be practical, it is important to follow the manufacturer’s maximum load specifications when designing Ikea Pax interior components. These can be found in the assembly instructions or on the Ikea website.
For flexible solutions, the following components are particularly recommended:
- Pax interior drawers, which can be added as standard and are based on sturdy sliding rails.
- Custom-cut shelves made from 12 mm (0.5 inch) thick MDF as intermediate shelves. These must be secured with appropriate shelf supports or brackets.
For drawers outside of the original system, so-called top-mounted or box systems can be used, which are installed onto custom-fit interior elements.
Note: Any modifications that affect the mounting points to the back panel or side panels can compromise stability. Appropriate reinforcement (e.g., with brackets or additional screws) is therefore advisable.
