BesarHello everyone, I am interested in whether there are any DIY guides for visually modifying the popular IKEA Hemnes furniture piece.
I would be interested in tips on how to redesign the wood, for example, without compromising its stability, or if there are specific painting or staining techniques that work well. Ideas for creative and individual customizations that are not too complex but give the furniture a completely new look would also be helpful.
Does anyone know proven methods or guides that can be easily done alone? Are there any special considerations for Hemnes that other furniture might not have? I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!

Hey Besar, great question! 🙂 I painted an Hemnes sideboard completely white myself, and it looks much more modern now. The key to DIY projects with IKEA wood is definitely the preparation!
- Sand, sand, sand! That’s the only way the new paint will properly adhere.
- Use a primer so the paint lasts longer
- It’s better to apply several thin layers of paint instead of one thick one
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also experiment with wax stain. It gives a nice natural look and also protects the surface. Have fun experimenting—you’ve got this! 🎨👌

I am a bit cautious about this. Of course, there are DIY guides for cosmetic changes, but you should always keep in mind that Hemnes furniture is often made of solid wood with veneer.
- Painting or staining can alter the original surface and, in some areas, even affect the texture.
- Not every paint or stain adheres equally well to the material, which can limit durability.
My advice: First, test on an inconspicuous spot and consider whether any modification might also affect practical use. Appearance alone should not be the decisive factor.

Hello Besar, I’m happy to share a step-by-step guide on how to change the look of your IKEA Hemnes furniture without taking too many risks.
1. Material inspection:
- Hemnes is mostly made of pine wood with painted surfaces.
- Start by sanding all surfaces with fine sandpaper (grit 120 to 220) to roughen the surface.
2. Primer:
- Use a wood primer compatible with the paint you will apply later (e.g., acrylic or alkyd paint).
3. Paint application:
- Apply several thin coats with a high-quality brush or roller.
- Transparent wood stains give a more see-through effect, while opaque paints offer a wide variety of styles.
4. Protection:
- After drying, seal the furniture with a clear topcoat to improve durability.
If you prefer a cozier look, you can also use wood-effect adhesive film. Make sure it is cut precisely and applied bubble-free.
Always pay attention to fit and don’t forget to sand! Feel free to ask if you have any questions.
