Hello everyone, I am currently looking for a suitable chest of drawers and have been taking a closer look at the Ikea Brimnes series. What interests me is whether there are actually differences between the various Brimnes models. I mean differences in construction, material quality, or functionality – perhaps also differences in storage capacity or assembly. Some may have specific surface finishes, others different dimensions or additional features like drawers with dividers or doors.
Does anyone have experience with this or can specifically explain what sets the models apart? I am particularly interested in reliable details, as I don’t want to base my choice solely on design but also want to know if the models differ in load capacity, stability, and if there are any hidden differences inside. Thanks for any help!

I would like to get a bit more technical here, as differences often lie in the details. The Brimnes series mainly uses MDF coated with a white foil. This makes the surface scratch-resistant and fairly easy to maintain.
The construction variations mainly differ in:
- Drawer slide system: Some use drawer slides with integrated ball bearings, while others have simple plastic rollers. This affects smoothness of operation and durability.
- Wall mounting: Larger dressers come with additional metal brackets included to securely anchor the furniture to the wall and prevent tipping.
- Back panels: Smaller versions usually have thin particleboard back panels, whereas larger models often feature more robust back panels with reinforcements.
It is also interesting that some doors include a soft-close function, while others do not. This detail can be important for long-term comfort.
I would be interested to know which room the dresser is intended for. This often influences which version makes the most sense.

I’m curious about which room the dresser is intended for? That often influences which option makes the most sense.Good question, thanks! I am planning the dresser for the bedroom. It should be a dresser that can neatly store both clothing and small items. The combination of drawers and doors seems practical to me, as I have different storage needs – for example, socks in the drawers, but larger items perhaps behind the doors. Stability is important to me since I also want to use the dresser as a surface for placing things.
For the bedroom, the Brimnes chest of drawers with a combination of drawers and doors is usually the most practical choice.
- Doors provide storage that is less visible, making it look neater.
- Drawers allow better organization and quick access.
Regarding stability: For all versions, the maximum load on the top surface is about 20 kg (44 lbs). Proper assembly is crucial to prevent wobbling.
Tip: Secure the chest of drawers to the wall to increase safety, especially if there are children in the house.

Stability is important to me because I also want to use the dresser as a storage surface. Here are some tips for ensuring stability and proper care of the Brimnes dressers:
- Make sure to assemble it correctly, especially that the back panel is properly fitted, otherwise the dresser will lose stability.
- Always use the wall mounting hardware, particularly for larger models.
- Due to the material, MDF is not suitable for damp rooms – but it is fine for bedrooms.
- Pay attention to the maximum weight limits for each drawer and the top surface.
- For combination types, hang the doors carefully at first, as their alignment can sometimes be adjusted to close precisely.
Following these steps will help maintain the functionality of the Brimnes dresser for many years.

I experimented a bit as well, and then everything worked perfectly! It’s really important to take your time with the adjustments, then the dresser becomes really enjoyable to use! 🙂
