EldonHello everyone,
I am currently planning to redesign some furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series. More specifically, I want to partially repaint or lacquer it to better fit my interior design concept. An important question for me is: Are there certain paints that work particularly well for Ikea Hemnes furniture, both in terms of appearance and durability?
I understand that Hemnes has a rather rustic, classic look, which could be nicely complemented by natural or muted colors. However, I am also interested in recommendations for contrasting or more modern color options that can give the furniture a fresh look without making it appear out of place.
Additionally, it would be helpful to know which types of paint—such as chalk paint, lacquer, or special wood finishes—are best suited when aiming for a durable and easy-to-maintain surface.
Does anyone here have experience painting Hemnes furniture or concrete tips on which shades or materials work best? Thank you in advance for your insights!

Are there any colors that work particularly well for Ikea Hemnes furniture, both in terms of appearance and durability? From my experience and several tests, it’s important to know that Hemnes furniture is made from solid pine or birch, which affects the choice of paint.
- High-quality acrylic or alkyd paints are best suited because they adhere well and are durable.
- Chalk paints are visually appealing but offer less resistance to abrasion and moisture, so they usually require a protective topcoat.
- Muted natural tones work especially well: white, cream, light grays, and pastel colors emphasize the classic style.
- For modern accents, deeper colors like dark blue or sage green are possible but are recommended more for accents than large surfaces.
Surface preparation is crucial: sanding and cleaning before application improve adhesion and longevity.

High-quality acrylic or alkyd paints are best because they adhere very well and are durable.I would like to add to this and explain some technical details that are often overlooked with Ikea Hemnes furniture:
Hemnes is primarily solid wood, mostly pine, with a surface treatment of a thin lacquer or stain layer, depending on the original color. This means:
- When repainting, you should first remove the surface seal by lightly sanding so that the new paint adheres properly.
- Alkyd paints are quite durable, cure well, and are often more resistant than acrylics but require longer drying times.
- Chalk paints can be used but must be sealed with a suitable protective topcoat like polyurethane or wax.
- For optimal durability, a multi-layer process is recommended: primer, paint layer, and topcoat.
If you plan to clean the furniture frequently or have it in kitchen or bathroom areas, I strongly recommend a scratch- and water-resistant finish.
One more question: Have you already decided on your preferred color palette? That would help tailor the recommendations more specifically.

I think this is a great topic! The Hemnes series offers a wonderfully classic look that you can either emphasize or update with a fresh twist. My personal favorites are:
- Warm beige and sand tones that are subtle and timeless.
- Soft pastel shades like mint or rose if you want to add some color without it being too bold.
- Dark anthracite or navy blue as accent colors – looks very sophisticated, especially on dressers or shelves.
I once tried a little trick: instead of solid paint, I used a lightly transparent glaze on the surface, so the wood grain remains visible while giving everything a more modern feel.
If you’re feeling adventurous, try a bold mustard yellow on a small area – it can look really cool! It’s always important to seal the surface afterward with a matte protective clear coat to ensure durability.
Good luck and enjoy your remodeling!

Why not boldly use stronger colors on the entire Hemnes piece? Ikea furniture, with its clean and simple design, is actually ideal for creating a modern contrast with bold colors.

I believe Hemnes furniture can handle intense colors on larger surfaces too, as long as you use high-quality paint and prepare the surface perfectly. Sticking only to standard colors means missing out on a real eye-catcher.
Of course, patience in preparation is essential, or the result can quickly be disappointing. But in a world full of white walls and minimalist furniture, such a color experiment can really bring a fresh vibe.
