Hello everyone,

I’m considering getting one or more BILLY shelves from IKEA, mainly because of the good price and the flexible design options. However, I’ve read in various reports that the durability of these shelves can sometimes be lacking, especially under heavier loads or with frequent moving.

My specific question is: Are there particular BILLY shelf variants or configurations that are known for especially high durability? For example, certain materials, construction methods, or additional reinforcements to look out for when buying, if you value sturdy and long-lasting storage?

I would really appreciate it if someone could share their experience regarding which BILLY models are especially robust and possibly how to extend the shelves’ lifespan. Thanks in advance for your tips!

I use the BILLY shelf with extensions and a metal back panel. This makes it more stable. Otherwise, it is better not to put too much weight on the individual shelves.

Longer durability of BILLY shelves is mainly achieved by choosing the version with solid wood frames or with thicker shelves.

Additionally, the metal back panel is crucial for stability, as it prevents lateral warping.

This is correct; these are the most important factors.

It is also recommended not to skip anchoring the unit to the wall, especially when the shelf is fully loaded.

I can definitely understand your skepticism about the durability of the BILLY shelves, especially if you value long-lasting furniture and use the shelves frequently.

I have also noticed that the shelves tend to sag a bit over time, particularly when I place heavy books on them. What helped in my case was the metal backing, which adds stability, and I also reinforced the shelves with additional brackets. A bit of handiwork and attention to detail. 😉

How often do you use the shelf, and what do you plan to store in it? Maybe there are alternative solutions.

I think it’s very important to consider the environment around all shelves, including BILLY. Damp rooms or direct sunlight can accelerate material fatigue.

I’ve experienced that too and found it frustrating. That’s why I would recommend opting for the more robust versions.

Also, maintenance: cleaning once a year with a damp cloth and avoiding placing heavy loads on a single shelf for extended periods — this might not be mentioned in any IKEA manual, but it works wonders for me.

Additional information regarding materials: BILLY shelves with a veneered surface are more durable than those with laminate. Veneer provides slightly more flexibility and is less prone to chipping.

I would therefore prefer the more robust versions.

Additionally, IKEA offers metal brackets to reinforce the shelves and reduce sagging.

Anchoring the unit to the wall is essential for safety, especially when there are children in the house.
