ᐅ Are there any tips for making Ikea BESTA units more stable during assembly?

LAIX48Hello everyone,
I recently bought an Ikea Besta shelving unit and am now facing the challenge of making it as stable as possible during assembly. The instructions are quite clear, but especially with larger modules or longer shelves, I feel that the structure remains somewhat wobbly, even though I followed the instructions exactly.
Therefore, my question to the community:
Are there any specific tips or tricks for assembling Ikea Besta furniture that can help improve stability? I’m not only talking about tightening all the screws thoroughly but also methods or additional measures to prevent the shelf from becoming unstable over time, such as reinforcements or alternative assembly steps.
I would appreciate concrete advice, especially from people who have assembled multiple Besta units and can share their own experiences, improvement suggestions, or DIY tricks. Thanks in advance!

To improve stability, I recommend the following measures:
- Use wooden or metal corner brackets to reinforce the connection points.
- Check all parts for proper fit before assembly, especially dowels and screws, which should fit tightly without any play.
- If needed, replace the supplied dowels with stronger versions if you feel they do not secure well enough in the material.
- When screwing parts together, tighten all screws evenly to prevent twisting.
- To increase stability at the bottom of the back panel, use small angle brackets or fix the unit to the wall (this is allowed according to the instructions and highly advisable).
These tips are based on multiple experiences and are compatible with the standard assembly.

I would like to add that with the BESTA system, it is especially important to install the back panel correctly. Often, it is only lightly fixed, which causes it to lose its function as a stabilizing surface.
The back panel should not just be placed in position but carefully secured with the supplied nails or screws (depending on the model) to create a wall shear panel that later prevents tilting and twisting.
Furthermore, retightening the screws several weeks after assembly can help, as wood often settles slightly and connections can loosen over time.
There is also the trick of applying a bit of wood glue to the dowel holes before inserting the dowels – this improves the clamping effect and increases the long-term durability of the joint.

Especially for taller or wider BESTA units, wall anchoring is essential for stability.
If visible screws are not desired, small brackets can be attached behind the furniture. These remain mostly out of sight while still providing long-term safety.
Another tip: If the floor is uneven, felt pads or small shims placed underneath can greatly improve stability and prevent wobbling when touched.
