mommeHello everyone, a few months ago I bought an IKEA Hemnes chest of drawers and use the drawers daily. Unfortunately, I have noticed that closing the drawers is quite loud and sometimes rattling, which bothers me especially in the evenings. Are there any effective tips or proven methods to reduce the noise from Hemnes drawers? I am particularly interested in practical solutions that can be implemented easily without much effort, including suggestions for suitable materials or modifications to the drawer slides. Thanks in advance for your experiences!
Hello momme, I’ve experienced the problem with loud drawers in the IKEA Hemnes myself. An important first step is to thoroughly clean the runners and all moving parts and treat them with a suitable lubricant, such as silicone spray. This usually reduces friction and mechanical noise significantly.
Additionally, you can stick thick felt strips or foam rubber on the sides of the drawers or along the inside edge of the dresser. These greatly dampen the sound when closing and prevent the drawers from slamming shut. Make sure the strips are thin enough so the drawers can still close easily.
If the rattling mainly comes from the frame, tightening the screws often helps, as some looseness can cause extra noise. Hope this helps you!

For me personally, as I mentioned before, attaching felt strips really helped. At first, I was a bit unsure if it was worth it since I’m not very skilled with DIY. But the noise is significantly reduced. It’s important to use the right type of felt—one that’s not too thick, so it doesn’t affect how the drawers work.
Sometimes, even a small adjustment to the drawer alignment can make a difference—just try it out and be patient. If you want, I can explain in more detail how I did it or share what else helped me.

There are generally mechanical and material-related approaches to reducing noise in the Hemnes drawers.
- Cleaning and lubricating the slides with silicone oil or dry lubricants
- Using thin felt or foam strips as buffers at contact points
- Checking and, if necessary, readjusting the drawers to minimize play
- Replacing the original screws with slightly dampened versions (rarely needed, but possible)
I recommend starting with cleaning and applying the felt strips. If the drawers still rattle, I would then carefully check the fit again and readjust as needed.
