Good morning everyone, I recently bought some IKEA Hemnes furniture for my son’s bedroom, and safety is very important to me. Therefore, I want to ask: Are there any proven or recommended tips for making IKEA Hemnes furniture safer, especially in a child’s room?

Specifically, I’m interested in how to minimize risks such as sharp edges, lack of stability, or tipping, as well as how to protect the furniture to prevent injuries during play. Perhaps there are special accessories, padding, or installation methods that should be considered. I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Hello tipako, I think your question is really important because accidents caused by furniture tipping over are quite common, especially with children.

A good tip is to always anchor the furniture securely to the wall. IKEA often provides suitable fixing materials like anti-tip kits. If not, you can easily buy them separately.

I also recommend covering sharp or pointed edges with special edge protectors made of soft plastic. These are flexible and absorb impacts well.

Assembly is also crucial: all screws and connections should be tightened thoroughly using the correct tools. In general, with furniture like Hemnes, make sure that no load-bearing shelves or drawers are loose, as this can affect stability.

To protect surfaces or prevent injuries, felt pads or cushions are also useful, especially if children like to climb on or bump into the furniture.

Hope this helps as an initial overview!

I find it interesting how often it is assumed here that furniture becomes safe simply by being anchored to the wall. Of course, that is a basic requirement, but people often forget that many accidents happen because children use furniture as climbing frames.

These Hemnes designs, with their sturdy frames, practically invite climbing. My point is: if you want safe furniture, you also need to modify it so that climbing becomes unattractive. It’s a bit like playgrounds – the design should encourage safe play, not pose a risk.

So my advice: rather invest in additional safety or anti-slip surfaces on the tops and corners, and when in doubt, reduce the height and accessibility. Hemnes furniture is attractive, but without such adjustments, it may not be ideal for active children.

Always secure furniture to the wall. Install edge protectors. Do not place heavy decorations on top. This helps prevent most risks.

Additional to previous posts:

- Securing against tipping is mandatory because Hemnes furniture is quite tall and heavy.
- IKEA provides special child safety instructions on their website, especially for the Hemnes series.
- Edge protectors made of EVA foam are recommended because they are flexible and durable.
- There are child safety locks for drawers and doors that prevent accidental opening.
- When assembling, do not replace the original screws with shortened or low-quality screws, as this weakens stability.

If you place the furniture on carpeted areas, basic slip resistance can be achieved.

The most important tip: regularly check all fasteners for tightness after assembly.

Adding to kieran’s comment, I would like to share a practical tip: I found it effective to securely attach the furniture to the wall in the children’s play area and to cover the surrounding floor with soft mats. This creates an additional layer of protection in case of falls.

Additionally, using furniture bumpers or drawer safety catches can help prevent children from easily pinching their fingers in drawers.

Personally, I have also applied corner reflectors to the furniture. These are discreet but help to make sharp corners more visible in low light conditions, which can be especially useful in the evening.
