Hello everyone, I have several pieces of furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series in my daughter’s bedroom, which are mostly made of lacquered pine wood. Since these pieces are heavily used every day—whether from dirt, fingerprints, or occasional spills—I am looking for effective yet gentle cleaning tips for this furniture. Ideally, I would prefer methods that do not damage the lacquer finish, leave no residues, and if possible, provide some light protection against new dirt buildup. Are there any recommendations or experiences with specific cleaning products or techniques that work particularly well for Hemnes furniture in a child’s room? Thanks in advance!

For cleaning Ikea HEMNES furniture, I recommend the following: Use a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth without harsh cleaners. Soap-based water or a mild dishwashing detergent solution is safe to use. Avoid heavy scrubbing or abrasive sponges, as they can damage the finish. For grease stains, a little rubbing alcohol on a cloth can help, but be sure to wipe again immediately with clean water to remove any residue. A wax care product specifically designed for lacquered wood can be used to protect the surface and make cleaning easier. Important: Do not use cleaners containing ammonia or solvents.

Just take a damp cloth and a little dish soap if needed. Then wipe dry thoroughly. Do not use abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals.

I love my HEMNES furniture in the kids' room, but yes, it does get dirty quite quickly 😊! I often wipe it down with a damp cloth and a little mild soap. After that, I let everything dry. Avoid using any harsh cleaners! My tip: occasionally apply a bit of furniture wax afterward, which provides great protection against new stains and makes the surface look almost like new again. So don’t get discouraged— with proper care, these pieces really last a long time!

Interesting, could you possibly specify a product category or ingredients to look for when choosing a wax protection? I want to avoid using harsh chemicals in the children's room. Also, are there any risks associated with using it too frequently? Thanks!

For painted HEMNES furniture, I recommend furniture waxes based on beeswax or carnauba wax. These are natural, gentle, and do not leave a sticky surface. The ingredients should be free of silicones and harsh solvents to avoid damaging the paint layer.

Yes, an excessive wax layer can dull the surface or cause buildup that attracts dust. Applying every 3 to 6 months is generally sufficient.
