Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of assembling an IKEA Hemnes piece of furniture – specifically a dresser – all by myself. Since it is a larger item, I wonder if there are any tips or tricks that can make solo assembly easier, especially with Hemnes models. I have assembled some furniture before, but Hemnes seems a bit more complicated due to its size and some bulky parts. Are there hacks to make heavy lifting or drawer installation simpler? Or methods to avoid mistakes during assembly when you don’t have a second person to help? I look forward to your experiences and helpful advice!

Hello frahenry36, your question is very well formulated and shows that you already have some experience with furniture assembly, which definitely helps. If you are assembling Hemnes on your own, I would especially recommend the following: Allow plenty of time and read the entire manual before starting.

- Sort all the parts and label them if necessary, in case they are not clearly marked already.
- For heavy lifting, a carpeted floor or an upside-down blanket is helpful to rotate the furniture on the floor without damaging the finish.
- For drawers, use sturdy supports such as a box or books as temporary props while attaching them.

Also: Stay calm and try not to complete all the steps at once. Hemnes comes with relatively good instructions, but sometimes it helps to loosely fit parts together without screws first. If someone can help you at short notice, don’t hesitate to arrange a helping hand for lifting large components. Good luck!

First, tighten all screws only by hand to start with; this makes it easier to make adjustments later. Use a hammer drill with a clutch setting for tightening, so you don’t apply too much torque.

Many issues can be avoided by working step-by-step and strictly following the instructions. Especially with Hemnes:
- Prepare a large, clean workspace before you start to lay out all the parts.
- Use tape to temporarily group small parts and screws together—this way you won’t lose anything.
- For heavy parts, I recommend using furniture pads or specialized lifting tools available at hardware stores; these make handling much easier.

Also: if possible, take photos of each assembly step. If something goes wrong, you can quickly identify where the problem is. For many floating flaps or doors, you can temporarily use wooden wedges or books to stabilize the piece of furniture until everything is secured.

That’s an excellent tip! I would add: remember to take breaks too. Hemnes furniture can be quite demanding, especially when working alone.

Also, if you ever need a free hand to hold a piece but no one is around, a combination of glue clamps, clamps, or even door stoppers can be really helpful for temporarily securing parts.

And for fun: think of the whole process as a little workout – good mood and music are often the best helpers when building furniture solo! 🙂 Good luck and keep us updated!
