Hello everyone, I am planning to repaint an IKEA KALLAX shelf because I find the original surface too matte and somewhat uneven in places. My question is: Are there any tips or proven methods to achieve a smooth, even, and professional-looking finish when repainting? I have already considered sanding between coats with fine sandpaper but am unsure how many layers of paint are appropriate and whether there are specific types of paint that work best. Any advice on the right sanding materials, primers, or application methods using a brush, roller, or spray can would also be very helpful. Thank you in advance!

Is it advisable to treat the KALLAX shelf with a bonding primer or adhesion promoter before applying the primer?

Yes, that is a very good idea, especially if the original surface is melamine-coated. An adhesion promoter significantly improves the primer’s adhesion and prevents flaking.

Are there any disadvantages to using a roller instead of a spray can, particularly on edges and corners?

Using a roller is great for larger areas, but on narrow edges it can quickly cause streaks or too much paint buildup at the margin. In these cases, a small brush or spray can works better for the corners. The key is not to apply too thickly to avoid runs.

One more tip: If you don’t want to use a spray can, it’s better to use a fine brush for the edges and a foam roller for larger surfaces. This way, you avoid applying too much paint to the trim and achieve a smooth, even finish.

Exactly, that’s important! I’d like to add that after applying the adhesion primer, you should also lightly sand the surface so the primer and paint adhere better. I usually use 280-grit sandpaper – it’s fine enough to roughen the surface without damaging it.

Regarding paint application: for beginners, I recommend using a high-quality, fine foam roller because it doesn’t leave streaks and allows better control of the paint layers. Touching up edges with a brush is useful; patience and fine brush tips help here.

Once you’re done, if needed, you can further improve the finish with very fine wet sanding (1000–2000 grit) and polishing – this creates a very smooth surface that almost looks like painted plastic.
