Hello everyone,

Lately, I have been thinking more about how to buy replacement parts for the IKEA Billy bookshelf. Especially when using furniture for a longer time, minor repairs or replacing individual components usually becomes unavoidable. I am very interested to know if you have any experience with buying separate replacement parts for BILLY – for example, shelves, back panels, or screws. I assume that IKEA does offer replacements, but I wonder if everything goes smoothly or if there are any restrictions regarding availability, quality, or cost. Does anyone have concrete experience or tips on how to get replacement parts, in case it is difficult to get them directly from IKEA? Thanks in advance for your insights!

I see it more nuanced than GALEO4. The issue is not only availability but also IKEA’s information policy.

A systematic inventory management for spare parts is not always in place, which makes availability more difficult.

This is important. When spare parts are not clearly labeled or stored according to the model, it also complicates customer service and reordering. Additionally, the prices for spare parts are sometimes disproportionately high compared to the price of the furniture – this negatively affects sustainability.

I wonder if IKEA could provide more transparency and create a digital spare parts database for users to make reordering easier.

I can relate to that, Mizar. I had a similar experience recently when I wanted to replace a broken shelf board.

IKEA did offer me replacement parts, but the process was a bit cumbersome and it took several weeks for the part to arrive.

On top of that, some parts were not sold separately at all. That was frustrating for me, especially since I wanted to use the shelf for as long as possible without having to buy a new one right away.

That’s why I think it’s good that experiences like this are shared here, so everyone knows what to expect. 🙂

I take a pragmatic approach: I’d rather receive a replacement part a few days later but have it be original and properly fitting. At IKEA, you at least have warranty claims if there are any issues.

IKEA feels more like a disposable furniture manufacturer anyway.

That might be true to some extent, but shouldn’t we avoid focusing solely on furniture quality? The availability of replacement parts for furniture in this price range is overall acceptable, in my opinion. And if you want genuine design, you’ll have to spend more or choose branded furniture.

This is not meant as an endorsement, just my perspective. However, experience reports are always welcome!

For those looking to purchase replacement parts for BILLY, I recommend the following steps:

1. First, note down the exact model name and measurements.
2. Contact IKEA customer service (preferably by phone or email).
3. Ask whether the replacement part is in stock or can be ordered.
4. Find out if individual parts are sold separately or only as sets.
5. Alternatively, check if compatible replacement parts from other IKEA models might fit.
6. If unavailable: consider third-party suppliers, but ensure suitable quality and proper fit.

Issues usually arise due to missing model numbers or uncertainties about part identification.

Transparency and thorough documentation help make repurchasing easier.

Great discussion here, really diverse opinions! 😊

I once ordered a broken shelf board from a third-party supplier. It fit reasonably well, but you could notice small differences in workmanship and color. It’s not the original IKEA part, but at least it was cheap and arrived quickly.

For my next BILLY attempt, I would definitely check with IKEA first, even if it sometimes takes longer. Sustainability and less waste definitely make sense!

Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences – it makes the decision easier!
