I recently started assembling the Ikea Brimnes bedroom furniture set and noticed that some of the supplied screws don’t fit optimally or don’t seem sturdy enough for certain connections. Especially with the side panels and drawers, I sometimes feel unsure whether the standard screws will hold up in the long run.
Therefore, I’d like to start a discussion: Are there alternative screws that might be more suitable for the Ikea Brimnes furniture than the ones originally provided? By this, I mean both the material quality and fit, as well as potentially better durability. I’m very interested in which types or sizes of screws are recommended, whether it’s advisable to use other manufacturers or special types, and what to watch out for when replacing them.
I would also like to hear if anyone has experience with whether alternative screws change or simplify the assembly and if there are specific issues that can be avoided by using different screws.
Thank you in advance for your knowledgeable tips and suggestions!

Are there alternative screws that are better suited for the Ikea Brimnes furniture than the original ones supplied? I mean both in terms of material quality, fit, and possibly better durability.Hello Jens,
your question is very well put and touches on an important aspect often underestimated with IKEA furniture: the quality of the screws and their fit to the specific furniture parts.
First of all: Brimnes basically uses standard furniture connectors and connecting screws, partly with wood threads, partly with threads for metal connections. The original screws are usually adequately sized but not always ideal for frequent use or under additional load.
If you want to use alternatives, I recommend the following approach:
- Material quality: Screws made of stainless steel offer increased durability and greater strength.
- Thread type: For wood connections, self-tapping chipboard screws are advisable to prevent the material from splitting.
- Head size: Screws with countersunk heads ensure flush surfaces without protrusions.
One possible alternative would be, for example, 4x40mm (4x1.6 inches) stainless steel screws with a Phillips head, which you can find at hardware stores. However, make sure that the diameter and length exactly match the original screws, as incorrect sizes can cause connection problems.
Additionally: You might consider replacing the metal dowels and connectors with more robust versions if you need to disassemble and reassemble the furniture frequently.
Summary:
- Original screws are basically suitable but not always optimal for permanent stress
- Stainless steel screws of similar size are a good choice
- Pay close attention to diameter and length
If you want, I can also provide you with exact screw specifications and sources.
Best regards!

What was important to me was that the screws didn’t feel too tight, since the furniture is made of medium-density fiberboard, and overtightening can damage the panels.
I know this topic may seem trivial at first, but especially for furniture you plan to use for a long time, I often wish the connection points were a bit more robust.
Do you already have a specific screw or supplier in mind where you can get these replacement parts? Sometimes it’s just typical DIY marketing offering cheap screws without much regard for quality.
I hope you find a suitable solution! If you like, I can share what upgrades I’ve done to my own furniture.

I think it’s great that you’re thinking about this instead of just using the supplied screws, which often barely do the job! I also upgraded the screws on my Brimnes set:
- Instead of the small screws, I used galvanized particleboard screws sized 4x40mm (4x1.6 inches), which are very sturdy.
- In my opinion, the quality is definitely better, and the furniture feels much more stable now.
- My advice: especially for the drawer slides, switching screws is worth it since these areas experience heavy loads frequently.
So, I can tell you: it’s really satisfying when the furniture no longer wobbles and the joints feel rock solid! 🙂 Sometimes you have to invest a little more, but it pays off.
I’d be happy to hear which screws you ended up using!
Good luck with the assembly!
